    Don't Tread on ME!

Well some of you may appreciate this as much as I do... actually everyone should! I'd like to keep the American Patriotism alive and gleaming like no other place in the world! Too many people are now back to the slumber, and dry routines prior to 9/11/01. No one seems to go out of their way to show anyone they come across how much they love our country. I try to whenever I can... and here's today's patriotic post! I know it's kinda long.. but read it... hopefully, you'll get that spine tingling American Spirit running through your body.. maybe some goosebumps on your arms! I got it in an email from a friend.

    American Guesser

In December 1775, "An American Guesser" anonymously wrote to the Pennsylvania Journal:

I observed on one of the drums belonging to the marines now
raising, there was painted a Rattle-Snake, with this modest motto under it, "Don't tread on me." As I know it is the custom to have some device on the arms of every country, I supposed this may have been intended for the arms of America.

First, it occurs to me that the Rattle-Snake is found in no other quarter of the world besides America.

The rattlesnake also has sharp eyes, and may therefore be esteemed an emblem of vigilance.

Furthermore, she never begins an attack, nor, when once engaged, ever surrenders. She is therefore an emblem of magnanimity and true courage.

She never wounds 'till she has generously given notice, even to her enemy, and cautioned him against the danger of treading on her.

Finally, I confess I was wholly at a loss what to make of the rattles, 'till I went back and counted them and found them just thirteen, exactly the number of the Colonies united in America; and I recollected too that this was the only part of the Snake which increased in numbers.

'Tis curious and amazing to observe how distinct and independent of each other the rattles of this animal are, and yet how firmly they are united together, so as never to be separated but by breaking them to pieces. One of those rattles singly, is incapable of producing sound, but the ringing of thirteen together, is sufficient to alarm the boldest man living."

Many scholars now agree that this "American Guesser" was Benjamin
    Franklin.

That sounds like Franklin's style of writing. He often found similarities between animals and the early Colonies.

He's also a great source of quotes as well:

"They that would give up essential liberty for a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

-Benjamin Franklin Historical Review of Pennsylvania (1759).

this one seems very appropriate in our current times...

the "don't tread on me" sign reminds me of what i like to think of americans.

Although this is sorta out there, its what i LOVE to think about americans. When i hear american, i see cowboys. Strong men who work damn hard and don't think twice about it. Guys that say "howdy" to any one new. Guys that work hard and play rough, and drive Ford trucks
Although i have a thing against horses and horsie people (don't ask. its sort of inherent with trail riding dirt biker dudes.)

So when i think rough, strong, your best friend unless you give him a good reason not to be, and then you really, really don't wanna be messin with him.

When i think of cities, i think of the older hot rod days.
I think of huge american made engines. I think of the street races (that i'm not old enough to recall, but have been told of oh so many times) of big block novas, mustangs, chevelles, you name it.

I love America. That rattlesnake is a very good representation of the American way.

I personally think the Rattlesnake is the best personification you can give to america.. Granted the Bald Eagle is not one to mess with... but it's true... when rattlesnakes get mad..they don't stop until they or the opposer is dead.. And as said..they give ample warning to leave them the hell alone... if you don't...better watch out.. anyone remember Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Enough of a rattle snake for ya?

Also.. about the tail... the ones painted on the drums had 13 sections to the tail.. same number of colonies... as rattelsnakes get older... more rattle sections grow.. as the country got older.. more states were added. Same values.. same attitude.

When I think about America..I think of the greatest, most powerful (in more ways than one), most pristine country in the world. However..reading the newspapers, and watching the news... I see a lot of people who just don't seem to have the american values this country was built upon.

I see stories of people raping and murdering and stealing, people killing their own children to get attention from the media, kids taking guns to school and offing teachers and classmates. What the hell went wrong? How can people be so stupid? Doesn't everyone realize in the end..we're all humans.. and we all share one thing in common. EARTH! There's no escaping the world we live in.. why can't we just make it a better place? Rather than make it worse?

Have you ever seen the movie "Pay it Forward"? It's got Charlize Thereon (sp?), Dustin Hoffman, and some little boy. It's an excellent movie..and I'll be honest..it brought a tear to my eye on several occasions. Find it, rent, watch it, live by it. I try. Everyday. Anyway.. enough of me complaining about our world... have fun..glad you enjoyed the post.

Its funny though, the turkey was almost our national animal. The reasons were that it was in such abundance, and served many purposes to our early ancestors. But, the bald eagle won out (probably a good thing).
