I'm trying to decide on whether or not to spend my money on getting a PS2 or not. One of the questions I have is, are there any new future gaming consoles coming out soon (like something better). Reason I ask is because I don't want to go out and buy a PS2 and then have something better come out like a week later. Also, what are the average prices for games for them? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Unless you like multiplayer, a PS2 is definatly worth the money. If you do like multiplayer, none of the consoles are worth it, yet. Soon, with all consoles going online, there will be many (hopefully) good multiplayer games coming out.
There are no new consoles coming out in the future, but they have already announced that they are working on the technology behind the PS3. I doubt it will come out any time within the next year or two. New games for all consoles ususally cost $50, but there are "Players Choice" games for PS2 that are cheaper ($20).
To tell you the truth, I would personally recommend a Game Cube. More multiplayer games, and the home of Resident Evil. Of course, I love survival horror games, which Game Cube is the king of. PS2 also has some very good games, however, like Metal Gear Solid 2, which is one of the best games I have ever played, next to Ledgend of Zelda OOT.
I'd say go for it."And I think your opinion that my opinion is wrong, is wrong."

There's talks of PS3...but I doubt that will come out any time soon. Whether a PS2 is worth getting right now all depends on the kind of games you want to play. Check out the gaming websites and read the reviews or previews of upcoming games. That'll give you a good idea of what games you might want to spend some time with. Games average in price for around $49. Price on games hasn't really changed much. Also, I heard the PS2 just barely went online? So if you like online games, see what games you might want to play. I think Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 is online.
Here are a few sites you might want to check out:

Online for PS2 is SOCOM: Navy Seals (a FPS with built in voice communication over a headset), and a couple of football games. I also believe THPS has been online for quite some time. Also- I doubt PS3 will be out within any reasonable time frame, so there are no concerns about that. Nintendo had stated it's focus will be on software, not hardware. Microsoft will probably be pushing some new hardware down our throats, since they are well known for doing so in the computer industry. The problem is that I need to buy an X-Box, but have no money."And I think your opinion that my opinion is wrong, is wrong."

Yeah, news of the PS3 came out the week during the Xbox's release. I think that was Sony's way of trying to take away market share from MicroSoft. I haven't heard of Nintendo planning on focusing on software only. Funny...I'm in the industry yet I don't know these things...LOL! Goes to show how they keep us working hard in our dark offices for hours on end...HA!
But if Nintendo does go the software route, sounds like another big giant getting out of the hardware biz...sounds familiar? SEGA! Of course, I loved Sega and I thought their Dreamcast was pretty good. But Sega's reputation and Sony's upcoming PS2 at the time took out all the momentum that piece of hardware had going for it.
However, if you like FPS games...Xbox is the one to get. Can you say Halo...or better yet...Halo 2? Not that I'm a big fan of that game as I prefer keyboard and mouse when playing FPS games...but the majority of people liked it enough. Pretty game that's for sure. Also, you get more bang for the buck with Xbox(comes with broadband capabilities and a hard drive to take advantage of the online features).
But the best choice is to do your research on the games you want to play. Why buy a console if you can't play the type of games you like right?"I just came for your mayonaise." ~ TooDamnSweet

I won't be getting an Xbox since my brother has one, so there's no need for me to get one (even though he doesn't live here with me, he still brings it from time to time). I've thought of the Gamecube some, I'm just not to familiar with the games. Like is the Zelda game (not sure what it's called) out for Gamecube already? If it's, I may seriously consider Gamecube, cause I love the Zelda games and it was the reason I bought an N64 when I had it.
Also, thanks gibby for those sites. I'm going to check them out. Main reason I'm considering PS2 is because of the wide selection of games and that I also can use PS1 games for it, which I can pick up cheap.Silver ULE X Valved Mag

Zelda isnt out for GC yet.
If I had the choice I would get ps2 or find a used dreamcast somewhere.
I dont really like the xbox controllers, and I really hate gamecube
I would just spend your money twords a new computer or a nice video card or something, personally I dont like console gaming. I was into it once upon a time, then I just got sick of playing them. I mean even renting a console for 5 days I get sick of playing it. But I would get ps2. I think it has the best contollers and graphics.Comment

Getting tired of it right away is one of my main concerns. Cause I really got tired of my brother's Xbox while he had it here for the summer. But I'm really looking into also for like when I have friends over it gives us something to do and that sort of thing. I may look into a used one possibly since there's a gaming store near me.Silver ULE X Valved Mag

It's Gamecube's and Xbox's sophomore year, so be expecting some nice stuff to come from them. PS2 is really strong for single player gaming, as was mentioned earlier. You've got games like FFX, MGS:2 Sons of Liberty, Devil May Cry (Devil May Cry 2 *drool*), but all of these are single player only. So in conclusion, PS2 tends to lack on multiplayer friendly games for the most part, so if thats what you are really looking for, check into Gamecube. And for Microsoft being so "evil" and speculations that they will find some way to rip people off everyone seems to overlook Sony's *cough* network adapter *cough* hard drive *cough*.Last edited by Can_Opener; 10-05-2002, 04:25 PM.

Actually, if you look at the history of video game systems and add ons...add ons never did so hot. Sega didn't do too well with their add ons(Sega CD, 32x). Nintendo failed at their attempt at a cd rom add on for their SNES(which eventually became the Sony Playstation). TV tuners for the Sega Game Gear. Sega's broadband adapter for the Dreamcast was a step in the right direction but didn't take advantage of it. I think Sony's add on hardware for their PS2 will also share the same fate.Originally posted by Can_Opener
...everyone seems to overlook Sony's *cough* network adapter *cough* hard drive *cough*.
A lot of times, customers will look at a game and if they see that they need to buy something else to play it, they generally will pass it up. I think MS did a good thing by including their broadband adapter and hard drive along with the system.
Also, a lot of people will do the math and add the expenses of these add ons and tag it to the overall amount they will have to spend just to play a game. When it adds up, it almost doesn't seem worth it.
Sure a small number of people will buy it...but if it doesn't sell enough, developers will not support it because it's just not worth the time and effort. It's still an early age for online gaming for the console world and I think it has a lot of catching up to do if it plans on matching the PC's online gaming."I just came for your mayonaise." ~ TooDamnSweet

Not bashing you or anything....But why buy a new video card every year at $300+ to play the newest games, when you could buy a consoles, for now lets say $300, when you could use that for 4-5 years?Originally posted by personman

Heh...3rd party companies make different sized and shaped controllers for all consoles....You are way off on the graphics, it has been Proven that X-BOX has the potential for the best graphics, its just the game developers choice if they have the time or energy to actually make it look nice.Originally posted by personman

Personally, I suggest X-Box, for normal people the controllers are not too big (
) It has a ton of games coming out, (Halo 2, UT, Etc) Ps2 may have MORE games out, but that doesnt mean the games are good, %90 of them...is just crap, The only thing i see in Gamecubes future, is just the same games you played on SNES, just better graphics, they just cant come out with any new ideas, and I think that will hurt them in the long run. Yes i know there was what....14 versions of Final Fantasy? Im sick and tired of that game, and am very surprised its doing so well. Sorry if I spelled anything wrong, its late, and Im tired....But when it comes to Next Gen Consoles, I cant stand not saying anything....

I really enjoy my PS2, but I also have an XBOX. Each console has it's strengths and weaknesses. At this moment I have more games for my PS2 cause I've had it since Day 1. Also SOCOM when played online is sooooo awesome, have played it for hours at a time. I think it's worth it.

If you are going to get just one console, make it PS2. It has the best selection of good games, and some very cool stuff coming in the near future. X-Box is second, killer system, smaller library.
Think Final Fantasy X, Devil May Cry, WRC, Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec, Kindom Hearts, SOCOM Navy Seals, Metal Gear Solid 2 and more out now.
LameCube has Eternal Darkness and the Resident Evil remakes and thats it.
X-Box has Halo, Hunter: The Reckoning, segaGT2002, DOA3 and in the near future Metal Gear Solid: Substance, Colin McRae Rally 3, Shenmue II and more.
I own an X-Box, PS2 and DC personally.2k2 VF Cocker, STO/Eclipse Blade, Old-Style 14" Boomstick,
