    What's with Games these days?

    Well, here's my rant.

If you look at computer/consol games these days, you see bigger and better graphics, and a lot of games SELL simply because the graphics are incredible.

Anyway, if you look PAST the graphics, and sit down and play the game, they all seem the same. Graphics and imaging have gotten exponentially better over the last few years, but how many games ACTUALLY do something with them? If you look at the Final-Fantasy line of games, many of the newer ones could have been 2-D (like FF6, FF3 here in the US) and you wouldn't have noticed too big of a change in gameplay.

I'm an Avid Counter-Strike player and play competitively, and I recently downloaded and played "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"... I was not impressed. There was ABSOLUTLY NOthing I hadn't seen in another First person shooter game in the 5 years before. It was your basic, shoot 'em up and get to the end of the level type game.

as far as FPS games are concerned, they've reached their eppitome(sp?) at Half-Life. Everything else has been or will be about the same IMO.

...another example is WarCraft 3. I also downloaded and played the beta of this game, and was not impressed either. Real-Time Strategy games hit the top probably around StarCraft. Probably the reason it's 'still one of the biggest games played today. Same goes for Counter-Strike.

Now an example of a game that HAS stood out, is Jedi Knight II, the light-saber duels in combination with the force-usage was really something quite fresh and new.

...anyway I hope you get what I'm trying to say.

i definantly get what you say theres like a trillion of the exact same game with different graphics and if it isnt humoungously buggy then they sell alot and theres nothing really new you accomplish by beating these games.

the most creative game i have seen yet was a game where you had to escape out of a wwII german POW camp and you DONT just grab someones gun and shoot everyone and jump over the fence. but they rushed the game to get it out on release date they set and its a piece of crap there fore noone will play it really.

wolfenstein is the same as other games because it is a recreation of sorts of the original wolfenstein which was the first first person shooter(even before doom)

there are some real time strategies that are diferent from starcraft and its similar products(like WC3 from what i hear) such as Earth 2150 which i like alot but i suck at it so i give up.

there are many inovative games that have come out in the past couple years(metal gear solid, deus ex, fallout, halflife, morrowind took an old concept that i liked and made it work, etc) but the game industry seems to be riddled with games that are basically better graphic representations of doom with multiplayer

There just isn't that much variety possible when you look at multiplayer first person shooter games. Two teams, and then its eaither CTF, hostage rescue, infultration, or last-team-alive type game.

CS, while a great game (I played it myself for over 3 years) does lack something that new games have...evironment. In CS if you want to hide behind something its a box, or a wall. A newer game like Soldier of Fortune 2 you can hide behind fog, grass, rolling hills. The game is the exact same, shoot the other guy. But the graphics add something to it. And if you dont believe graphics matter then why did you even buy CS? Doom is the same game, as was Wolfenstein 3d. As much as people love to complain about graphics driving the industry (which it largey does) games are getting more realistic, more emersive, and offering something for everyone.

There is a difference between the following 2 screenshots (obviously shrunk quite a bit), and that difference is more than just 5 years of bugs, tweaks, and graphical improvement. The graphics have added an element to the game that didn't exist in CS. The game is simply old, there is no way around that. And while some people still play pong, those who wish can move on...

Well, my fealings are this. Wolfienstine was a great game, and i still play it. There are some things you can do for game play. That is one thing deus ex did. that made it a whole nother world. My personal favorite is deus ex.

Another grerat thing is digital paintball, but again its the same. not much difference there... Oh well.

One thing that is really great, any oyur all forgetting is rainbow six. R6 is awesomely amazing. good graphics, more real time situations, its just better IMHO than a regualar fps.

I guess you don't really look into the FPS. Most of them have different themes. RTCW has the Undead Nazi army, SOF2 has terrorists, Time Splitters 2 is just crazy, and Metroid prime is METROID. I also know what you mean. I see it the same way you do, but I can also see how people could like those generic games. Do you have a gamecube? Im' having a lot of fun with mine. Maybe you should give it a try.
Wait till they get a load of me.

HalfLife was the best FPS shooter since Doom.

Its been out what, around 4-5 years now and it is STILL competative with everything else out there.

Eventually there will be another game that blows the FPS scene wide open again, you just have to wait for it

Yeah last I heard there are 50,000 people playing CS at any given time. That number is old, but still...amazing.

Someone correct me in case I made that number up. I am really tired.

I still don't understand what makes HALO to die for. Everything in that game has been done before and the graphics weren't awe-inspiring.

The fog and environment in sof2 may appear to help, until you realise that the enemies can see though, dust, fog, long grass, trees, doors, walls, the ceiling and anything else you choose to hide behind.

FPS games reached the end of their evolution at Quake, my friend, not Half Life. Nothing seen in HL (exceps perhaps what some would call the "story telling", which is a joke)Either way, I didn't like Half Life or Starcraft.
Time Splitters 2 is a good game, but none of the pre-made lavels are any good. I made a map that everyone I know seems to like better than any of the origional ones, and it took me 1 hour to make. I'm dissapointed by the lack of Goldeneye levels remade in there. Goldeneye had the best levels.
There are alot of people playing CS, but I don't know why. One theory is it's low sys req. Another is that it's free. Either way, I hate the stupidity spread by that game. I know many people who play CS. All of them now call Desert Eagles deagles, any sniper rifle is an AWP (which is just a typo, the real gun is an AW Magnum), and the only pistol that exists is a USP. Then there's the way everyone who plays that game acts (some kidd shot me with the AWM, and I didn't die. He started getting all mad, which for a CS player means "WTF POS MFer you GY FGT!!!!1" and said I was lucky. I told him I don't believe in luck, which made him even madder. Later he told one of my friends he was gonna beat me up. Funny.) CS just causes people to be dumb.
