Some cable companies dont care, since you aren't using any "extra" bandwidth, its all going through the one cable line going into your house. Others will demand that you pay $10-$20/month more per computer.

You can either check the cable company's website, or just not let them know you are doing it. The router takes the IP from the cable company, then assigns each computer inside its own IP. The cable company will never know unless you: tell them, or show them.

I hate to be the "bad guy" but yeah. linksys routers work great!....just wait until they go out and are under warranty. GOOD LUCK trying to get a replacement within 3 months! FINALLY on the THIRD one they sent was BRAND NEW and a NEWER model. After all was said and done we spent over 160$ on a freaking 70$ router. Granted we shouldn't have stuck with them.. we could have almost bought a SISCO router for that much.. but... we had already made an agreement with linksys to get this taken care.

Customer service = THUMBS DOWN
Timely responses to customer request = BIG THUMBS DOWN
Service in general = SUCKS A BIGONE and a HUGE THUMBS DOWN!

If you get a linksys, just hope it never craps out, otherwise.. you'll have 3 months worth of headaches in front of you. Also, we're not the only ones who had this much of a problem with them. Two people I work with and one my father works with ALL had the same freaking experience with this shady "Network Solutions" company.

Hmm- the router in question is not shoddy. Like I said my fat friend stepped on it, and it works fine, and also IS NOT BROKEN. I was stupid and left it in the middle of the floor. It still works.

I'll throw a hearty recommendation out there for Netgear

I have an RT314 and have had nothing but great things to say about it. There is also a great support group at dslreports.com to help you.

Zyxel Is another to check out. They are actually the OEM of Netgear and their own line includes some features that are really nice but not included in the Netgear products.

I've got one four-port router powering my 12 port 10/100 switch with a 36 port 10baseT below that. Even with a dozen plus computers on the line, no slowdown is noticable.

I've had nothing but problems with Linksys routers.. sorry to disagree with everyone I've seen a TON of them crap out.

My personal favorite is D-Link - I've had a D-Link router under my desk for about a year and a half without ever having to touch it, which is nice.

I'm using a Cisco uBR905 right now, but that's only because I snagged it from work - D-Link is what I'd recommend if you want something inexpensive and sturdy.

Linksys's may work good but i can't stand the way they look, I prefer the routers that are little boxes with lots of lights . Can't beat em...

I've never had any problems with Netgear either. Better yet, they're little boxes w/ blinking lights

Definately, they're so easy and if you do have a problem for some reason, They have a good tech support cd and also good tech support people.
