because hoppy, young people under the age of 21 are invloved in a disproportionate number of accidents per mile driven.

more than any other group of drivers out there. including us old people.

ever wonder why insurance rates are sky high for you young pups???

I just want to say, some of the worst drivers I've seen are adults. Yes even though us teens have not had our license as long or driven as long, doesn't necessarily make us all bad drivers (even though you didn't say we were bad drivers, just wanted to say this). The few teens we read about and that cause us to have stricter laws and higher insurance are the minority. Yes many teens speed, but so do many adults. Many adults I've seen think they own the road. And one thing that really angers me is that where I live if there is an accident involving a teen and an adult, unless there is substantial and one sided evidence and a good amount of witness', the adult is going to be given the benefit of the doubt 99% of the time and the teen is blamed. And the cops where I live basicly treat teens like their nothing. Basicly teens right now have a stereotype image when it comes to driving.

I'm on your side Hoppy but some people can be real idiots. For example, last Friday night 18yr old at my high school(bout 500 in the whole school) who is the captain of the varsity soccer team was stupid enough to get drunk, get in a car with 2 other people, and then street race down a narrow backroad in the middle of the night. He ended up crashing into a stone wall which gave one of his passengers a broken jaw and guess what: he didn't even get hurt. He DID however get arrested for DUI and that will surely hurt his life (record, college, sports, etc.). Anyway, just my 2 cents.

it isn't MY logic hoppy. It's stats. Pure cold numbers. And they exist whether you like them or not. And I don't appreciate the insinuations you make either. They're uncalled for and out of line.

Then you need to CAREFULLY reread my original post dude.

                    accidents per miles driven

You're right stats are numbers. And the numbers say that people under the age of 21 are in more accidents relative to the number of miles they drive compared to older drivers and the number of miles they drive.

Are their bad older drivers? I live in New York, all the drivers here suck. It's one of my biggest pet peeves that people seem to refuse to improve their driving skills. You're driving a 2 ton missle man! Improve! It never fails to amaze me that in just about everything else people do, the longer they do it the better they get. With the exception of driving. Maybe it's the old familiarity breeds contempt thing. I don't know.

This is not logic, this is cold hard facts. Does it suck? Yes, I wish more young people weren't getting killed on the road today. Is there something that can be done about it? Maybe. Tougher driving tests, tiered licensing, curfews, no passengers. Will they work? Again maybe.

But you sholdn't be taking this personally hoppy, it isn't an indictment of you, it's an all too familiar thing to hear and read about new drivers getting pasted on the roads. It's been going on since before you were born and it'll be going on after I'm gone.

is there some reason you've decided to make this personal?

because I haven't. I have not ONCE said YOU were a bad driver. I have not ONCE said YOU were going to have/cause an accident.

I pointed out the FACT the the numbers show all too often the young kids have too many damned accidents.

I pointed out that I wish that weren't the case.

I expressed my congrats on your getting on the road.

And the only thing you've done so far is compared me to racists, told me my logic says that I think ALL young drivers are bad, when I never said anything of the kind, and further paint me as some kid hater.

So far I haven't had to add anyone to my ignore list here on AO. You are making an excellent case for being the first, kid.

Look folks, its not prejudice, it INEXPERIENCE. Lasck of real world situations. Everyone starts off new...just keep your head on straight. We were all young once; and did stupid things driving. I myself am guilty of it. However, with age comes wisdom. Now I know better.
As an aside, I do want to mention one thing, and I have PLENTY of real world experience with this; dont streetrace on public roads. In the past year, I have been on the scene of 3 separate accidents, all under 21, of kids thinking they were mario andretti. It takes skill to maneuver a vehicle at high speeds; at 16, 17, 18, you simply dont posess that skill. Remember, other people are out there too. Someones mom, dad, whatever. It is really awful to have to go to a 17 y/o parents house, and tell them their son has been in an accident. It's even worse to tell them they killed someone else, all because they were racing.
I know I'm preaching. I just have a real hard time with kids involved in MVAs. I dont want to see anything happen to the folks here.
