    FCC no-nos?

Anyone know what words you cannot say on the radio?

I was on the radio last night for about 15 minutes, telling a story about my halloween costume, and they wouldn't let me say douchebag. BUT, that was my costume! So my story got turned into "I was a feminine cleansing product for halloween" etc.

Why wouldn't you be allowed to say that on the air? It was college radio, and I think the guy was just covering his rear.

In other news, I was causing havoc on the airwaves on PigRadio, Ramapo College's radio station, last night. It was fun

ah the FCC. Fun fun fun.

There are two catagories, obscene and indecent.

Obscene stuff has to satisfy 3 different criteria, but is never allowed.

Indecent stuff is not allowed between 6am and 10pm. Your costume would come under indecent probably. What time were you on the radio?

It was around 11pm last night, I think.

And Howard Stern is on after 6AM, and he's definitely indecent

Well it's kinda the DJ's call. It wouldn't surprise me if college radio might have slightly different rules as well.

        Either way a funny costume.

Douchebag was fine before. Neil Rodgers in Miami has been saying that for at least 20 years. I think the Bush administration has cracked down on the radio. Don't expect your freedom of expression to get any freer (is that a word ) after Tuesdays results

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

College radio can be different than commercial radio. When the school holds the license, they can add any criteria they wish to the way the station operates.

A station at a Christian school, for example, may set a zero-tolerance policy towards any swear word at all. A true story: I worked at a college radio station at a primarily Christian college in the early 90's. While the school pretty much left the station do whatever it wanted, when the old ladies and their church groups started writing letters complaining that I played Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast", it nearly got me kicked off the station. As it was, I got the song banned... until we got a new director who didn't know of the previous ban.

Radio also has this weird "community standard" issue. Things can be indecent if the community thinks they are. Don't even get me started on this one...

              Blah, oh well.

As a side note, a funny story about college radio...

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) lost its license to broadcast for something like 15 or 20 years, which they regained in 1998. As the story goes, in the late 70s or early 80s, the people running the station were upset because reception was so bad. You could be standing on campus and you'd get mostly static, and it got worse if you left campus.

These brilliant engineering students figured they needed a boosted signal and a new antenna. So what did they do?

Add more power to the signal, and hook it up to a pair of nearby railroad tracks.

Legend has it that they were shut down when an FCC official in Florida suddenly found himself in NJIT's broadcast area

I can't vouch for the truth of this story, but I do know that NJIT really did lose their license for quite a while, and this was the story going around as to why it happened. True or not, its a good story

CB radios and railroad tracks work awsome, sit next to one pushing some power and you can talk some distance
