I've done 2 types of fencing. Both with barbed wore and with swords. Actually, most of the fencing I do now is based off of 15th and 16th century manuals. A smattering of 17th century as well. I prefer DiGrassi to Vigiani.

yeah, classical fencing is pretty cool. What I really like about it is that as a fencer you never call your own touches, but you can decline ones called by your opponent. If done right, it's based on honor. Kinda like outlaw paintball....Comment

I never really did any fencing, some of the other guys in my neihborhood had, but it kept the local pawn shop in buisness.
okay shartley beat me too the gag so it probably won't be as funny, but yes I have tried it, years ago. Will if you find a place LMK I wouldn't mind trying it again.[email protected]

Yep. It was pretty fun, didn't have enough time to devote to it though. Once life settles down a bit it'd be fun to chekc out again.Originally posted by halB

Fencing
Fencing is ok but it is way to stylized. It is like pretending to fight with pretend swords. Try out the a good martial arts school, the adien empire, or sca if you want to learn to sword fight. The only problem is that after doing either (in my case all) of these you will be unable to fence. The linear only movement is just way to restrictive. Besides what is a good sword fight without foot sweeps and leg chops.
As to the kendo comment It is lots of fun. We do extensive kendo and bokken fighting in my Shoa-lin classes.Comment

I took fencing classes for a year. I had to stop cause I moved away from my fencing school. If I could find the time again I would like to do it some more...its been so long.
I tried all 3 styles, but I was the best at foil. Sabre was fun...but I couldnt get the hang of it. Epee, while supposedly the closest to "real" swordfighting, I found to be the most debased....mainly due to the scoring and points system.
I liked foil the best because it was closer to how you would *train*....if you were actually training for smallsword.
I also have a rapier and dagger (for 16th century historical fencing)....but I cant find anyone to train with. Everyone I find is too much into stage fighting, role-playing, or un-realistic rules....(i.e. SCA).
Fencing is really fun, you should try it...but dont think its gonna be like the movies.

Hm.. I just have done it once, and don't know much..
But in Fencing..Who attacks first is the only one that can score till his retreat. Like if you lunge at me, and then I hit you, it does not count.. I'm not sure, but this is what my freind said that has been doing it longer. In Epee, it is the same style but scoring system is better...? Because it does not matter who lunges first.Comment

Someone correct me if Im wrong....
What you are talking about is "Right of Way" which is used in Foil and Sabre. Basically it means whoever initiates the attack first has the right of way..and you must defend against it. So if I lunge first but you are quicker and hit me before I hit you....I still get the point because I had the right of way.
If I attack first and you successfully parry the blow, you have the option of attacking(riposte) me back immediately..in which case you then have right of way...and I now must defend.
In Epee there is no right of way and you try to hit the opponent before they can hit you. Double hits do count. So If you hit each other at the same time you both score a point.

I'm the Captain of my Schools Sabre team currently, and will more than likely be getting into Penn State via fencing. It's a blast if you can get the hang of it.
