Cha ching!
I made a second computer right out of crap.. I spent $5 to get it working and have internet..
I got really bored cuz my mom told me no computer for a day.. so I realised, hey I have all these random parts laying around my house, why not build a computer?
I found a case, cd rom & motherboard in the attic that was recentally put away, so I grabbed that, and hooked the power supply up to the wall, turned it on and there was the oh so familiar *beep* YAY!
So I turned it off and found a video card. I then started testing moniters that were put away for taking to trash.. after the first one (lol it was so old it diddnt even have the right kind of connection) I got the second one with what looked like a screen from BIOS burned into the screen, and that one worked fine. Twas nice and small so it could fit into the space next to my current computer.
Then I started on my hard drive/OS quest. We have about 5 1 gig hard drives, some with stuff on them, and ones that are unknown.. I plugged one in and it seemed to work, and I found a windows 2000 sever cd and after many attempts (swapping out hard drives ext)I finally got it to format my hard drive and start installing.. thats when my brother told me I diddnt want win2k server. DO'H! Ok so I did a search around my house for OS cds.. I found a Win 98 SE cd, a Win 95 cd, and a Windows XP cd. I tried all of them and my computer just diddnt want to boot from them.. some times they would boot and then have errors while loading the setup. I switched the cd rom drive for a nicer, faster 52x one. The computer would boot the CDs alittle easier. Then I cleaned all the cds and finally got Windows XP to start installing. I got it installed. Everything was working *PERFECTALLY* but I diddnt have internet.
So I plugged in a network card, and it recognised it, but it wouldnt, for the love of god, install the drivers!
I looked all over the internet for windows XP drivers and its all like sorry we dont have drivers for windows XP because windows XP installs all the drivers in the world automatically. It kept asking me for the CD, but two problems with that.
1. I DIDDNT HAVE THE CD!
2. If I had the CD, it would say that windows XP included the drivers, and they wouldnt be on there.
So I looked on Compusa.com for network cards and I found a cheap 17 dollar one and on the companys website it said it supported Windows XP, and it included a CD with drivers on it. Excellent, right?
So I went to Compusa to find that after rebates the card was only 5 buckos!!!!! AWESOME!
I bought it and took it home. I plugged it in, and put the CD in the drive. Windows XP recognised the card, and asked for the drivers on the CD. So I told my computer it was on drive D, and it said no drivers are found for this device, and I'm like what the heck?!
Ok, so I would download the drivers online and write them to a CDRW.(Thank the lord for these things, I love the heck out of mine) So I click the link on the Windows XP drivers, and you know what it said!?!!?!?!
'After installing the network PCI card, XP will auto install the correct driver automatically.'
This officially pissed me off.
I got the computer to boot from a Windows 98 cd, and formatted XP. Then I installed 98 and everything worked great. I installed the drivers that were on the CD that came with the card, and it worked fine. I hooked it up to my router and now it has internet.
This new computer is awesome. I use it for AIM while I'm playing games on my main computer, and while my friends are over if they want to be on AIM at the same time or wanna play (crappy) games with me, or just do stuff while they wait for their turn on a 1 person game. Its pretty nice if you ask me, and its got an old skool moniter!
Oh yea!
(BTW, now after my hassle with hard drives, at this sale yesterday they were selling 20 gig hard drives for $20.. right AFTER I build this computer and go through all this hassle to find a good hard drive.)
Sorry guys, I just had to show off a little!
