It kind of looks like a sinker too,but it is too big and there is no hole for tying it to the line anyway.

i doubt that carpet would have that type of effect on solid brass, and a couch has small rivets for the leather

keep in mind i found this at the side of the road

If it weren't for it being brass, I'd say it looked like a backing hammer for an impact rivet gun. It very well could be although I think brass is too soft a metal for that, anyway, cool paperwight.

it looks like some kind of latch. like something would be holding on to the flat end by clamping around where it gets small (make any sense to anyone else?) and maybe something could slide around and latch on to the other side. ill draw a diagram

whatever was going to hold on would slide over the round part and then latch onto where it curves in.

looks like a mass (weight) for counter balancing scales or as a calibration device for checking accuracy. The ones i use at work are all brass, look similar but machined differently.
