Do you choose what you get to do? Like do you sign up as a cook/pilot/deck guy/gunner/mechanic/etc. or do they put you where they ned you?

It is funny after having my father and both grandfathers in the army, each serving 30+ years. They only advise to me was what ever I do, don't join the army. They always said it laughing, so I never knew if they were serious or not. But if things go right, and I lose enough weight, I am planning on joining the service as a Foreign Service Officer, or an International Relations Officer. I am leaning towards the Navy, but if I get in shape enough my overall goal would be the Marines.
