First off, compact flash has an adapter to let it plug into a PCMCIA port on a laptop and look just like a hard drive. These adapters only cost $12 or less.

As for a decent cam, take a look at the Canons. I have a Digital Elph and I know a few other people that have other models. Very nice cams for the money.

I just would like to say that you should buy a digital camera made by an actual CAMERA manufacturer. Canon, Nikon, Minolta are all great names to choose from, and there are PLENTY of differant models made by these three that can fit your needs.

Anyone who knows anything about cameras will tell you that the lens is the most important part of the camera. The camera body itself does not "take" the picture, the lens does. A lot of the non-camera manufacturers who put out digi-cams use aftermarket lenses. I know that some Sony use Carl-Zeiss lenses which are pretty good, but I'd rather trust Canon or Nikon with that.

oh, and you've got to realize that the quality of the image that you're getting is not directly preportional to it's "megapixel" rating.

a 2 megapixel camera is not getting you twice the resolution as a 1 megapixel camera. it's getting sqrt(2). Remember, the CCD is recording SQUARE image, and the mega-pixel rating is the area of that CCD.

therefore, in order to get 2x the quality of a 3 megapixel CCD, you need a 9 megapixel CCD, not a 6 MP CCD.

if you're printing to a 4X6, 3 megapixels should give you decent quality prints, that is assuming that you're using the highest quality available on the camera, and that can be pretty hefty on the memory size.

IN order to get a print the SAME quality as a 35mm Negative (assuming you can blow it up as large as you like) you'd need an 11 megapixel CCD.

Just some tips you might need when shopping around.
