Dual 4ohm voice coil- what amp?

I just bought an alpine 10" subwoofer for my truck. Its dual 4ohm voice coil.

Should i be sending 2ohms to it, or 4ohms? I got the amp coming, its a JBL 150.1 mono woofer amp.

Don't worry, i don't listen to rap, and i don't like to impose my music on others. I just want the best sound i can get in the cab

My truck is louder than yours. A lot louder.

Ok, here is the skinny. If you wire those voicecoils in PARALLEL the Amp will see a 2-ohm load. With your amp, the speaker will be getting 150watts. If you wire the voicecoils in SERIES the Sub will present an 8-ohm load. Which you dont want since your sub amp is only stable at either 2 or 4-ohms. So your ONLY connection option is to wire the voicecoils in PARALLEL.

Wired in series your sub would be able to handle much higher wattage but only because it is less efficient (and would consequently requier a much more expensive amplifier). Wireing it for 2-ohm, it will be more efficient (Db per watt) and for you, in your setup, much louder. You just have to be sure and not crank it too much, the cone of that sub will be going nuts in 2-ohm, but it's not like it's not built for it. Did you get the Type-R SWR-1041D? Those are AWSOME subs. The JBL amps are also very good. Since you have a truck cabine, that setup will rock your world. Just make sure to use good quality interconnects like Monster Cable, and use a good Headunit.

Theoretically, you could get a two channel amp thats 1 ohm stable... run the woofer in parrallel, so that the speaker sees 2 ohms, bridge both channels from the amp, and you'll be at one, which will give you a ton more punch. That's how I ran my Eclipse Aluminum.

you people, you cant handle 2 kicker solo baric L7's with a concept 2400 watt class D mono block runnin parallel......

Well, i like concept, MMAT, and JL amps, but they are mostly class d, and you want a dinky little amp. I would go for a Kicker or like a little Rockford.

Nice, thanks for the responses guys.

With my knowledge of speaker compenents, dual voice coil means there are actually two voice coils? A larger diameter and a smaller within it?

So to wire it in parallel there must be two pairs of input terminals? Two positive, two negative? That means i run the positive line from the amp to the first positive on the sub, then straight to the second (and same for negative, on the negative side)?

I'm almost positive it was a type S. The SWS-1041D 10" sub. I know that its 600w peak and 200w rms.

I have a new alpine CDM-7874 with preamp sub outputs and all. I also have two 6.5" kenwood 2ways in the doors. I still have the stock rears, they actually sound decent, which amazes me, but they will be removed or replaced in time.

Thanks for all the help guys! I can't wait for the orders to come in.

Yah, that's why Kicker lost their two largest competitors on last years USAC circuits... the L7s are HORRIBLE woofers. The sqaure design isn't very efficient, and the way the "cone" and coils are constructed, ANY distortion coming in from the head or amps will blow the subs in a heartbeat.

              Go find yourself a W6V2, a W7, or an Eclipse Alum/Ti... and you'll have a two-fold more durable sub.
