    Archos MP3 player

For my birthday, my parents were very nice and gave me an Archos 10 mp3 player/recorder. As it works as a USB hard-drive, it needs a driver. When you plug it in, a wizard pops up, and it asks you where the driver might be. It should be on the CD that came with the mp3 player.

But when I try to get the wizard to detect a driver, it doesn't. I explored the disc, and it has a file for drivers, and it has drivers in that folder. The wizard just doesn't show it.

So, pretty much, I can't put the mp3's on the player until I find out how to fix this. I e-mailed Archos, but usually you guys can tell me what's wrong before the tech-support guys do. Oh, I have Windows 98.

when trying to install the drivers do you specif the cd rom drive or do you let windows search for suitable drivers

try downloading drivers if you can't get the cd to work, for some reason it usually goes a lot smoother that way.

In the wizard, (which for some reason doesn't show up now, I think I'll restart) there is a check box. I do what the manual tells me to do, which is check search for a driver on the hard drive, and look in the CD also. It gives me nothing.

And I downloaded the driver, and it didn't find it either.

Okay, I tried to use the manual add new hardware in the control panel. It didn't work, so what I did was copy the files out of the CD and onto my desktop. I had it search, and it found them. But when I tried to use the new driver, it opened a "copying" window, and then another window that told me to insert the "USB portable device install" disc or something.

So I did skip files, and the same thing happened. Really, the same thing happened for about 15 files that it had to copy. So the driver doesn't work now, because it is missing files. Something is just wrong.

I have an Archos 20 and what you have to do is install the drivers BEFORE you plug the jukebox in and power it up. That is the way I did it and I have had no problems with it.

Okay. How can I uninstall the mp3 player from the machine then? Because when I go to "Add new hardware" it says that "this device is already installed, but there is a problem". The problem is the driver is screwed up.

So I need to uninstall the mp3 player from the machine, and start over (I think). But I tried Add/Remove programs, and nothing was labled Arcos or mp3 player. Also, I tried to find "Archos", and nothing. I can feel I'm close.

Also, thanks you guys. I'm almost there.

I don't know how you would find the drivers you already installed if they are not appearing in the add/remove programs. All of my archos drivers appear in the add/remove program section...

No, I don't have any drivers installed. The Archos mp3 player is installed. So I am trying to uninstall it, so I can do what you said, which is to connect it in that special order. But since it is installed, the wizard doesn't show up, so I can't do that. So I need to uninstall the device, not the drivers.

right click on my computer and go to properties.

Go to the device manager tab and you should see something labeled archos or something of that sort, should be pretty obvious.

Highlight it by clicking once, then click the remove button.

                    good luck!

oh yeah, if you're comfortable giving me your ip, (i'll give you mine but i would be able to see yours also) we can do netmeeting so i can control your desktop and hopefully i can find out whats goin on.

if you want to, pm me.

I uninstalled the device from my computer, so thats all fine. I'm back at block one. CoolGSak, how do I install the drivers before I plug in the device, like you said? It seems the wizard does that at the same time, but it doesn't find the driver on the Arhcos CD.

                        I fixed it.

What I had to do was copy the whole CD into a folder on my hard drive. So the first thing I did was make it search for the right driver on the whole hard drive. Didn't work. So I went back, and made it search just in the "drivers" folder I made. It found it, and everything went off without a hitch.

Something Windows uses for finding things might be out of whack.
