Well I have a pretty nice system I built ... anyhow, its been working great for a while ... WindowsXP Pro (sp1) running solid, games running fine, and the works ....

Well Sunday Morning I got home from my night of photographing a club/rave event (Dynamix II w/ Jackal and Hyde) and I'm running my PC and it locks ... bummer ... no biggie, I reboot and I get the OH so wonderful message.

The following File c:\windows\system32\config\system is missing of corrupted, please run the XP repair from the xp disc (or something like this).

GREAAAAAAT ... well who cares, probably just a damaged file ... I drop my XP Pro disk in and restart .. choose Repair .. "your C: is corrupted and cannot be repaired, please reinstall windows"

GREAAAAAAAAAAAAAT again! ... Well not a gigantic deal .. I have my 2nd HDD in this system w/ XP on it so I boot into that and take a few files off of my system I wanna keep and then I go into the profiles folders so I can get files that are on my desktop (that aren't system shared) and .. GREEEEAAAAAAAAT my profile is corrupt and it cant get to it which means all the pics I took the night before at a party and all sorts of stuff <b>ARE GONE!</B>

So I ended up having to format my hard drive, completely reinstall WinXP Pro and stuff ..... luckily I was able to save most of my programs "install" files and stuff because I had them in my shared directory ... and I was able to save my MP3's and Pictures archive (I have 25,000 pics I've taken for various clubs/raves on my computer stored) ... so it wasn't as bad as it could of been.

Spent ALL yesterday redoing everything!

But ... THAT SUCKS!

Kind of sounds like what happened to mine. I was running Windows 98 and it would keep giving me these flippin' error messages and stuff so I decided to borrow a friend's copy of Windows XP and redo the HD. Anyway. Things are much better now performance wise(well, as good as they can get when your running a 300mhz computer), although I do miss the old days.

I put windows on my main box running dual boot with linux(for games) and it already got a virus or something of the like and started running really slow, then all the sudden I get flooded with bluescreens.. all I can say is thank god for redhat.. I might get around to putting win2k pro or something like that on my computer to replace my windows partition, that is if I cant get wine to work.. can you still use the fat file system on winnt or do you have to use ntfs?

Install XP Pro and its service pack ... its stable like 2K/etc and it runs fine (I've been running it since its Beta period).... out of the box XP has lots of compatability issues, but if you just run the updates from www.windowsupdate.com it'll be fine

In XP pro you can run it under NTFS or Fat32

I used to have a pirated version of win xp pro and it wouldnt let me install SP 1.. anyway it was a major pain in the arse to dual boot, and I formatted the partition because it was NTFS and I wanted to mount my windows partition on linux, therefore I needed FAT, so after I formatted I tried reinstalling and the CD was corrupt, so I just installed the first thing I found -- windows 98 SE.. I found a pirated win2k cd in my basement that I thought I'd try though..

hehe...running linux takes lots of practice...and even more patience..i had a friend corrupt my entire root directory trying to fix my monitor resolution...

My system did the exact same thing about 2 days after I installed a bad stick of RAM.

I GOT THE SOLUTION!!!
Get a Mac!! They can run some of the PC programs, but why do that, Apple has software that is just as good if not better. Oh, Safari, the new web browser was released for Macs, OH MAN IS IT FAST! Seriously, Macs (with OS 10 of course, which is stock) NEVER lock up, it will NEVER crash (unless you have very bad karma ), it will serve you well for many years. Why mess around with a problem ridden PC when you can have a Mac! Believe me, I used to have a PC, it was NOTHING compared to my new Mac.

My PC w/ XP never locks up ... never crashes ... my hard drive just died thats all

Dropped in the 40gig and installed my OS/etc again and its been fine ... ran tests on my primary drive and looks like the head was going bad cause there's errors on it EVERYWHERE including the partition.

Sending it back tomorrow to get replaced ... Thank god for the 40gig backup.

Bleh, WD has been going downhill lately, I dunno what their deal is.

I try to buy maxtor, havn't had many problems with them.
