    Upset With My School!

I'll start with a little disclaimer:
Your going to read this and think that I'm saying all this because I'm mad I didn't get my little snow day thing, Well, maybe that is part of it, but either way...

I go to a private school in College Park, Ga with students from all around Atlanta. For weather closings, we follow the schedule of Fulton County, a large county that includes many of our students.

On December 3, 2002, The president of the school sent out a letter to the parents that included information on the Official School Closing Policy. The letter said

[Note: If Fulton County decides on a late opening due to weather, we will close for the full day. On days when Fulton County has no school scheduled, we will make and announce our own determination.]
(When they say "Fulton County has no school scheduled" they mean, a day off, not a cancelled day of school)

Fulton County has decided to open two hours late tommorow, so according to the schools policy school SHOULD be cancelled tommorow.

Instead, at around 8:45 tonight the website said that there will be school tommorow! That did not make me happy to say the least, and I was very upset and still am.

However, the thing that upsets me the most is the fact that they took the letter, which had been put on the internet, and took out the part that contained that policy. The page still says updated Dec. 3, and the signed and dated letter still says Dec. 3! Making it clear that the changed it, or added a section to it, or writing a new section would be one thing, but PRETENDING THE POLICY NEVER EXISTED!?

The reason we follow Fulton county is because the school was critized for being practically the only school in North Georgia open a few years back during a MAJOR ice storm. All the parents complained so the school said instead of making the decisions themselves, they would do what Fulton county did.

They made that policy so that they did not have to make a decision, now, when they dont like the decision that was made, they take back the policy and go back to the old way. This makes me wonder, what the point of policy if when you dont like how it turns out, you just pretend it doens't exist (and take away any evidence of its existance).

Now I DID Print out a copy of the original letter, and I know of TONS of people that saw it earlier today.

I plan on writing a letter to the president of the school, and I'm not quite sure what to say, ANY SUGGESTIONS?

I plan on asking for an official apology for changing the letter.

The weather is fine right now, Just like personman said in his thread, there is no reason not to have school. But my main concern is how they "erased" the old policy, as if it didn't exist!

I realize some of you might think I'm just a kid upset about his school stealing his snow day, but I will be in school tommorow, but I will still be upset about changing a signed, dated letter.

As a friend called me to tell me there was school, I was walking out the door going to a friends house an hour away, had my friend not called, my night would have been ruined!

I have talked to several other people and they all had made plans that were ruined!

I agree, It isn't even that cold here, and whoever cancelled school today probably wasn't making the best decision, but thats a whole different topic for a whole different thread.

Now does your school say to check the site when there's the chance of a closing, or do they just say go by Fulton County? If they don't, then I'd say half your school be empty tomorrow. Because they just can't go and change their policy without notifying to all clearly and where everybody can see this. Not everyone has the internet, so unless they call you, there's probably going to be some upset parents tomorrow.

I'm hoping for some severe controversy. They always announce at school: "remember, we do what fulton county does".

And apparently they called only some people, because my friend was called and I wasn't. Maybe I should just not show up....

If I had that decision, I wouldn't go, but my parents would say otherwise. It's sad when your school cannot keep its own word. Especially a private, because unlike public, kids aren't forced to go there and it's all run on the income brought in by students, something as small as this may even cause parents to get mad, because it's basicly that your school lied to you (that's how I see it). But there could be fine print or the little writing, some sort of disclaimer your school put in this that says something like all cancelations must still be approved by principal or some other junk like that.

I've looked for the fine print, and it doesn't seem to be there.

I agree that it basically boils down to my school lied. In my mind it is as simple as that.

Ahh, the priorities of schoolchildren. I hope you put the same effort into your homework as you do trying to get out of school.

Since I only have one side of the story, I can't make an informed judgement. I'm willing to bet the school can do a good job justifying their position.

You really can't be upset its a private school thing they do that all the time there is really no way to stop them. As for public school, last year or maybe 2 years ago my school was closed at 6 pm the night before a big hurricane was spose to hit well by 9 the weather man said it would not hit us. Once they have called off school they can't call it back on. So we got a prefectly sunny day off from school. My advice go to a public school they let you off more then private ones.

Argh, People are still missing my argument...The part I am mad about is the manner in which they changed the policy, NOT the fact I had to goto school.

Ugh, come on people read the entire post.

Well, let me rant about my school now

Last year the school administration ADDED DAYS to the school year, by eliminating one of our vacations!

Our regular school vacations were Presidents week in Feb. and Spring break in April.

3 Years ago they sent out questionaires to all the parents asking "Do you want the Feb. and April vacations moved to the last week in march. For 2 years they got a resounding "NO MORONS!"

Well last year they just went ahead and did it without consulting the parents. "Fine" I figured, two weeks vacation at the end of March, right? Cause they were "combining" the vacations, but again, they srewed us over. It's only one week at the end of March, which means we went from having 181 days of school, to 186.....

Doesn't bother me much this year, being a Senior I'm rarely in class/school, but it still sucks...

Heh I could have sworn my school folowed fulton county, so we were going to come in 2 hours late but my mom called the school and they were like were open.. you should have gotten a call last night, but no we diddnt err yea uhm so we came in late and did nothing the whole school day, it was a complete waste of time.

But yea shove it in the principals face.. no, better yet, get everyone who saw it before they changed it, and form a mob and make thousands of copies of the policy you printed out, highlight the section that says
If Fulton County decides on a late opening due to weather, we will close for the full day. On days when Fulton County has no school scheduled, we will make and announce our own determination.
And bust down the doors to your school, run through the halls setting everything you pass on fire, and go to the princaples office and use someone as a human battering ram, and when you bust through the door with their head, throw him/her hard so they go through the principals window, and out onto the ground. Then pick up the president and carry him to the dumpster, and put him in it along with the thousands of copies you made.
