Ok, the story behind the picture is that I was showing a co-worker how you can get arial photos from MapQuest. We looked up one of his relative's addresses and I started zooming in. When I got to this level...whatdya know? A jet!

....maybe I'm a geek or something, but I just found this to be really cool. The coincidence that a satellite snaps a photo from 50~100mi up and happens to catch a jet that is flying by at 18000~35000 ft at 250~350 mph is just amazing!

        O-well. Guess I'm easily entertained.

i just thought a plane would look a little bigger unless it was just taking off or landing. most jets fly about 30 miles high (i think), and the atmposhere goes up about 60 miles, and a satelite in low earth orbit is like 100 miles high right? that plane looks only about 2 or 3x bigger then it should be.

I'm pretty sure that cruising altitude for a jet is
30,000 ft, and if my math serves me correctly that is only like 6 miles. I am only pretty sure that is the cruising altitude though.

                            the address was:

                            Ashley Lane
                            Libertyville, IL

I just went there this morning and the photos are different...much better quality.

assuming there are 1000 planes in the air and they are flying at 10000 feet altitude, figureing the area of the spere at which the planes are flying and the planes are flying at mach 1. Figure the area of the photo is assumed to be 10 miles square, the odds are somewhere around 1.6 billion to one.

Beam, you wanna pick my lotery numbers? heh (j/k I don't gamble)
