the modchip itself doesnt cause the laser to burn out, but i read somewhere that playing some ripped games force the laser to read slower or faster then its supposed to which causes it to eventually (after a year or 2) burn out. so i guess it depends how many pirated games you use, if you use alot then the money you save on games will mean you can just buy a new xbox eventually.

When I play games using the mod-chip capabilities (this is what scares MS), I tend to play them right off the hard drive, because they've been downloading from various places and ftp'd to the machine.

OTOH- you can replace the POS dvd-rom that can't read burned media (except for cd-rw's) with whatever dvd drive you want, so I don't see why that would necessitate replacing the whole xbox.

FWIW- Microsoft has admitted that some of the xboxes they shipped had faulty dvd drives and has recalled them, you can find more info on www.xbox.com

I'm not under the alkafluence of inkahol that some thinkle peep I am. It's just the drunker I sit here the longer I get...
