    Radar detectors?

Hey I was thinking of getting one of these. Does anyone know how much I would have to spend to get a decent one? Any particular brands that I should look into or stay away from etc. I can't afford to get another speeding ticket and I was thinking might be a smart investment

I've owned several different models, including a V1, and I think it's way too easy to overpay. The V1 still received a lot of false alarms, though fewer than the cheap models. It also has the ability to distinguish multiple signals and tell you the direction. I didn't think that was worth the price and returned mine within 30 days.

My advice is to keep it under $100, but I don't care for the "features" for which you pay extra.

Yeah, and if for some reason if you're pulled over, even if it isn't illegal in your state, it'll make the cops just look that much harder at you.

I got a remanufactured Cobra off of e-bay for like $55. It came with a warrenty and all that good stuff. There are a few false alarms but not to many, plus it talks to me in a nice soothing voice , anyways I thought it was a pretty good deal.
To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered
where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus,
and a clown killed my dad.

lol kev, weren't we JUST talking about this Sun.?

yeah, if i was a cop and i pulled someone over and they had a radar detector, i probably wouldnt be a nice friendly helpful cop, more like a strict, law abiding state-trooper type cop

Oh man! I almost got pulled over after the Paintball Expo in SoCal-Pomona. He was on the other side of the street at the left turn lane. I passed him going a little fast. I saw him make a u-turn and I was like "CRAP"! He even followed me on a left turn that I made. Well, I was about to make the left turn on a protect light and some NHRA race fans decided to cross the street on a red light. So I just let them, while the cop was behind me, then proceeded my left turn. Thankfully the cop just passed by me. Whew! I was close to sweating. Anyways back to the topic. Don't get the cheapest model. There's a reason why they are price low. Ask the workers there and they should be helpful.

When I had one it gave me a false sense of security, I still got tickets. Alot of the times if the dectector goes off you've already been hit.

The best way to avoid traps is to look for them. You can usually see them from far away. Also beware of dips and blind turns in the road. Police like to use the those things to mask where they are untill it's to late for you to see them.

If all else fails, drive slower.

Well, if your detector picks up a cop using laser, you're pretty much screwed.

BTW, I drove from Chicago to Minneapolis in under 5 1/2 hours. No radar detector. I was mashed in a whole mess of cars crusing at ~100mph. A buddy of mine has a way of always finding a pack of cars and semis to draft with. I'm too scared to draft, too many dumb drivers.

most of them actually claim to jam the lasers so the cop CANT get a reading on how fasr youre going

Well, if you have to get one, get a cobra. They're pretty good. Make sure you get ones that detect the most different kinds.

Your best bet is to just watch though. Lasers range is pathetic, bout half mile. ( A good cobra can pick out a laser emission at 3 miles) You should be able to see farther then that! The key is to run as unobtrusive as possible. Stay out of the "fast lane". Stay in groups of cars. Drafting is good. Only leapfrog groups if you know you're safe.

But for the love of all thats good. If you're going out to drive FAST (like over 100), please please please check your car out. Look at brakes, rotors, axels, get new tires, alignment, everything. Don't need anything going wrong at that speed.
