I think it's the Irony of it. Pretty amusing for those of us considered 'hackers'. I'm proud to call myself a White Hat, I'd never do any of that stuff to be mean - only to learn. Mitnik is someone I've actually looked up to, some of the stuff he's done is amazing...

I agree, this is pretty run of the mill, not 1eet skillz or anything; but c'mon Sam, you gotta love the irony, don't you?

I know several people who make thier living dealing with internet security who would disagree with you. Especially when the site goes beyond just webpages and has customer information and credit card numbers.

So - lets say youre site got hacked (assuming its hosted by an ISP and not yourself). If I remember right, its just a business site - not an ecommerce one. Would that mean you would still have total confidence in your ISP to run a secure server? Do you want to run the risk of your customers coming to your site and seeing gay porn? If you wouldnt leave your ISP for one breech - how ahout 2-3? At what point does its become a valid point?

And if your business is internet security - it is especially embarasssing. Its like a mechanic who cant get his own car to run. Do you really want to trust a company that cant secure its own servers - ecommerce or no?

You're right - ecommerce sites like amazon - vs business sites - like your own - require different needs. BUT - thats because - to be honest - no one cares if your site gets hacked.

When a high profile ecommerce site - or a high profile business site - and certainly a high profile Internet Security business site gets hacked - thats when you get the nifty write up in CNN. If it truely was no big deal - then we wouldnt know about it. Through these examples - even if you dont have a "ecommerce site" - you may need to have that type of security levels to "save face" for one, and two because cnn.com or ibm.com is more likely to face hackers than shartleys customs for example (or mister44.com for that matter). To have lax securty just because its not an ecommerce site isnt excusble for everyone.

And to be fair to mitlick - he probably has a bullseye nearly as big as RIAA - for the shear thrill of hack attempts.
