You know what I've heard of? Some guys I know joined the marines, got whipped in basic, became great marines, served a few years there, and then went to the army. They had much better skills, were in better shape, new how to take orders better, etc than the guys who had started out in the army. Anyway, long story short, those guys climbed the ladder of the army, and climbed it fast. Even years later they still feel like amrines, and credit their training with what they've become! It is a route you might consider:)

As a Former Army Troop, I say MARINE'S
In the Army when you finish you're obligation,
          you become a Civilian.

whats the highest rank you can go in the army/marines without going to school?

like just joining up after highschool and doing bootcamp or what not

Well, you're gonna get all kinds of biased opinions here. There is a "professional disagreement" between the Army and the Marines; either choice, as far as combat related careers, are pretty much equal. The Marines dont get all kinds of brandt-new equipment though; all that high speed stuff you see generally goes to the specialized units. Also, like it was said before, the Marines will stick you whenre they need you. Now, the Army will do the same thing; however, they will try to place you in the job you want, as long as you qualify. ultimately though, the Army needs to fill a job position, and you're qualified, you go.
As far as the discipline and esprit de corps; I really think that it depends on your career field. I have always been infantry, and there is great esprit de corps within these units. We look down on "regular" soldiers. I am not sure how the marines are structured; but, 90% of the Army supports the 10% that fights. And, we usually get cool toys, whereas, the marines get the leftover budget from the Navy.
One thing though; if you arent looking for a combat-related job, your best bet will probably be either the Air Force or Navy. If you want to be cold, wet, miserable, and in the field alot, join the Army. If you are clueless, join the Marines
You have any questions, PM me as well. REALLY think about what you want to do, and explore ALL your avenues.

(again, no slight to marines. In the end, ALL services are brothers in arms. Its just an army/marine thing)

Not per se...however, I had a friend that was in 3 yrs, and the only time he was on a ship was to paint it. They do have stateside jobs; I have no idea what they are. Mainly their ground troops are the marines though. The couple of exceptions are the SEALs, and their Search and Rescue guys. But, S&R works with the marines as well...

Not to take anything away from the Marines, but you do know the Iraqis surrendered to unarmed RPV's. When you don't even want to fight an RC plane, your heart just isn't in it.

well, im in the army reserves right now. biggest mistake
i have ever made. i love the army. everything about me
is soldier. and i belong in one of the units with good
espirit de corps and great leaders and a mission. as i sit
i am in germany, on deployment, sitting here going out of
my mind because i am getting paid to "soldier" and there is
no soldiering to do. i agree with OldSoldier, we are all
brothers. I have some Marine Friends, one is new, one knows TO THE HOUR how long he has left... and hes not a short timer. he hates it with a passion. his platoon is a bunch of women beaters, alcoholics, and delinquents.
no matter where you go you are going to have to deal with, fight with, and live with people you hate.
and now i have to go drop off my flak vest so i dont have to carry the badboy all day. ill get back tomorrow and tell more.

Also, did you know that a marine can transefer to any other branch of the service, and not have to take basic again? Even if a navy SEAL transfered to the marines, he would have to take marine boot.

I am stuck in the same situation also. I have a army recruiter coming to my house Monday to talk to me. My mom and uncle want me to go into the airforce. My uncle graduated top of his class and turned down a football scholarship to Michigan to go to the Air Force Academy, but i just dont have the grades to do that. They both say join either Navy or Air Force because they are the "smarter" of the group. I was thinking of going to college and having the military pay my way through then doing my duties.

But i really want to be in the 101st Airborne Division. That is my goal in life.

After i graduate college, can i still apply for Air Force or Naval Academy as a post-graduate student?

If you are being made to take up the sevice as a "brainy" guy in the navy or airforce, you really ought to so the airforce academy thing! You get skills, rank, and you get to be in CO. You can't find a better state to live in! :)
