Student Starts 'United White Persons College Fund'

    Yay, it's about time IMO:

Matt Coday says he's ready. "I'm fully prepared for the firestorm that's about to erupt," he said.

He's prepared for certain controversy over the name of his new scholarship. It's called 'The United White Persons College Fund'.

Convinced that white people are discriminated against in the hunt for college cash, he's already raised over $1,000 for his cause. "One purpose of this fund is to serve as the direct antidote to the United Negro College Fund, and other organizations whose primary purpose is to promote the advancement of any one cultural, racial or ethnic group," he said.

When I first heard about it I thought it was a joke," said Martin Dorsey, President of Texas Tech's Black Student Association. "If it's genuine then I'm all for it. College is expensive, I know first hand. But if they're just doing it as a retaliation to the United Negro College Fund, then no," he said.

"There's a decreasing amount of scholarship money available to me because I'm not black, not hispanic, not native american," said Dorsey.

Just how much money is available? A conservative estimate puts the figure at $3 billion, dispersed in 900,000 different scholarships. By comparison, the United Negro College Fund raises approximately $29 million a year.

There are over 21,000 white students at Texas Tech, just 818 black. Coday says he's not a racist and would refuse contributions from white supremacist groups. The Black Student Association says they'll wait and see the public's reaction to coday's venture, before deciding how to respond.

"I think it's time for a serious debate in this country about what is and is not discrimination," said Coday.

How are they going to say it's racist when they (black, hispanic, etc.) have their own funds dedicated to their race, so naturally, this makes it even. Hey, now everybody' s got a fund. Seriously, no one has the right to complain about this.

      SMOKE...HE'S COMING FOR YOU....

I would see how at the outset it could be construde as racist, however as the above replies also state, the other races all have their own funds, why not a white fund. It's stated that he doesn't want money from white supremecists..
Once you have shot and eliminated someone, you have established your position towards them. In a sense, the next move is up to them...

It is discriminatory, just as discriminatory as the any of the other funds for specific groups of people.

As an aside, something to think about, it hasn't been 40 years since there were literary tests and and other requirements to vote which kept blacks from voting. The country has changed a lot, but IMHO anyone who thinks that the "fund's" main purpose isn't (as the article put it) "in retaliation" to the United Negro College Fund is pretty blind.

Of course it is. And you should be free to create an organization that is as racist and descriminatory as you'd like (as long as its your and your members' money and resources, and doesn't infringe on anyone else's rights). I know that is a pretty scary thought to some, and I believe there should be some laws to prevent descrimination in certain places. But the fact remains that if you dont like the discriminatory practices of an organization or company, you dont have to support it. As far as I know the UNCF doesn't get any government money (my money via taxes), and I choose not to donate to it based on its discriminatory practices.

Society will continue to try to "feel good" and "do the right thing", but I feel people are free to be ignorant and you are free to not support them or try to re-educate them.

You're right, but none of it is correct. Its all discriminatory and I've always felt this way, however I just think this levels the playing field persay.

I think it's odd how racism is some "taboo" thing, that someone mentions and says "oooh, that's bad, can't do that" when everyone actually does it, however not to an extreme extent.

Don't tell me that when you look at an Asian man, and then a Black man, dressed exactly the same, you don't think of them differantly, or react to them differantly when they say the exact same thing. People build steriotypes, and preconceptions about EVERYONE ALL THE TIME. But Stereotypes are Sterotypes for a reason. A *lot* of the time, stereotypes are truly the case.

What *I* think is racist, is how a white man has to watch every single thing he says, but a colored man can say just about anything he/she wants without being racist. THis double-standard pisses me off.

When *anyone* says they want equality, what they *REALLY* want, is inequaliy in their favor.

...anyway, that's my rant on race/racism/blah blah bleh.

I think this program is a great Idea. I hope that sponsors take this seriously, and not as a "racist" movement.

Edit: Crap, I voted "no" but I meant to vote "yes". Discriminatory? yes. In a bad way? No. The fact that this fund is only applicable to white people makes it discriminatory from the begginning, but it is by no means in a bad way.

That is exactly how I feel.

On a side note sort of, we have a 'black cultural club' at our school. Their budget is huge. They get tons of money to go on 'cultural trips'. These trips are just trips to NYC to go to clubs and party. So someone here tried to setup the 'white cultural club'. He basically took the charter, and the budget for the black cultural club and made changes where necessary. The administration here basically just shunned him away. When he told them that it was just the same as the black cultural club, they just ignored him. I wonder if it's because our president, Shirley Ann Jackson, is a Black woman. I'm not racist, but if black students can get tons of money from the school (money that I paid!!!), why can't I get some of it back too. I guess if it were up to me, we'd have one 'culture' club. Thats it. All cultures could join it, and learn about other cultures. Ok, my rants done.
