math question

ok.. the problem is

you can buy 2pounds, 3 ounces of sand for 3.13$ . you can also buy 0pounds, 6 ounces of sand for .73$ . the sand has a fixed rate for ounces and pounds and you also pay a constant rate for the box it comes in.

normally i wouldnt have a problem with this problem.. but the damn box!! how do i do this?

thats easy, find out how many oz is in a pound, then convert the 3 pounds 2 oz into oz, the divide by how many oz are in a pound, or you can do it a different way., then divide the 6 oz by 6 to find the price of the oz, and the box is undefined because you dont know how many lbs or oz are in it. Huh? The way I'm looking at that, it's either redundant, or you also have to pay for a box, plus the sand that goes into the box. I'm leaning toward redundant though.

Espo, please clear that up for me, and I might be able to clear up the problem for you.

without the box
mathematically written
2p + 3oz = 3.13
0p + 6oz = .73

next step
multiply the top equation by 2 so that i could get the 2nd coefficient in each step equal
4p + 6oz = 6.26
0p + 6z = .73

next
subtract to get one variable/coefficient alone

4p + 6oz = 6.26
- 0p + 6oz = .73
-----------------
4p = 5.53

next step
divide by the coefficient
4p = 5.53
-- ----
4 4

p = 1.3825

next step
substitute into one of the equations
2(1.3825) + 3oz = 3.13

Math

2.765 + 3oz = 3.13

move over the 2.765 to get variable/coefficient by itself

3oz = .365

divide by 3

3oz = .365
--- ----
3 3

oz = .1216(6 reapeating)
p = 1.3825

with box(i dont know what to do.. this is a guess)
2p + 3oz = 3.13
0p + 6oz = .73

b + 19oz = 3.13
b + 6oz = .73
ect ect continue problem after here.

2lbs, 3oz = 35 oz
b=box
s=sand

b + 35s = 3.13 (box + 35 oz sand = $3.13)
-(b + 6s = .73) (box + 6 oz sand = $.73)

29s = 2.40 (subtract one problem from the other)

s = 0.0828 (the price per ounce for the sand)

Substitute this figure back into the equation to get the price for the box.

b + 6(0.0828) = .73

b = 0.2332 (the price for the box)
