Yeah, I've just been thinking about some good precautions I could take to keep my computer safe from hacking... Almost got my dad's laptop screwed over because of a trojan and I don't want to encounter anything worse... I already have a firewall and updated anti-virus software... anything else?

Thats about all I know of, maybe (I don't know if this is possible) change your IP around often, if its broadband.

I honestly believe that if you're careful, and you're not sticking your nose in places you don't know well, then you shouldn't have a problem.
IRC is one thing you don't want to be messing around too much in.
I've been running my computer on winXP for about 8 months now, without any sort of virus protection, and I've had no complaints of people getting viruses or anything from me. The only thing I really do is use adaware to get rid of spyware, and that's it.

Thing is... a lot of script kiddies and newb hackers from my school are trying to test on me for some reason... So I guess I'm starting to develop a paranoia of them.

What exactly are they trying to do, and why are you letting them? Run a packet sniffer, get their IP's, and report them to their ISP if you dont like them toying with your PC. Besides, I never take script kiddies seriously, all you ahve to do to become a "hacker" magnet is get on an AIM chatroom and start badmouthing someones favorite band, then watch the IM's come rolling in about "Oooh 1337 m3 h4x j00" and blah blah blah. Never had anything happen to me. Actually, 98% cant even get my IP, and the ones who can never find anything to do with it.Good traders: a_bloomer10, nub, mark_426

well, i'm not letting them... But i did slip up a little and let one get to me... I killed his attempt though. It's just bugging me that they're doing it and that they're actually getting closer to screwing my computer up.

Yeah, I have a router and hardware firewall and active software firewall and active virus protection on my dad's laptop... that's what concerns me the most so I put the most security on it.

ok
if you are using a router:
turn off remote admin and enable block wan request
do not forward any services(unless you really need to host a website, online game etc.) i still reccommend against this.
if you have a software firewall, you can run that as well. this will alert you to outbound as well as block inbound traffic. undo your ruleset and start over from scratch.
if you have a network: only share folders you need to and set good 7 character passwords(mixed alphanumeric) on each shared folder. avoid using netbeui if at all possible as it gives out way too much info to casual snoopers.
update your antivirus at least weekly.
occasionally run a netstat -a from a dos box to see if there are any rogue processes listening
if anyone gets in after this you let them in or opened a suspect attachment.
download and learn to use netcat by hobbit. you can set up some nifty honeypots with it and lead those leet haxors to their d00m.Comment

well, i was going to say something like "if someone really wants in your computer, not much is going to stop them." then i saw you were dealing with script kiddies : ) they're kinda like cockroaches, you can never quite get rid of them. i use a hardware firewall, in addition to my software one. don't really have any need for virus protection, i have yet to get one...Comment
