Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mocking Bird

I've read quite a few good books lately

I pretty much love all of Orson Card's books perticulary the Ender Series (maybe its because im young but there good lol) Also his series on The Memory of Earth

The Left Behind series was incredible, even if you are not a religous person they where still excellent.

I'm a London fan also, White Fang, Call of the Wild, To Build a Fire; you just can't go wrong.

If anyone here rock climbs Addicted to Danger would be a good book to read. Its an autobiography of a man who climbs K2 Everest and neraly dies many times.

Ummm...thats about all i can remeber right now. Hope my childrens books didnt ruin the thread haha, but I get an A for effort

Edit: I can't belive I forgot the Counte of Monte Cristo by Dumas! A must read if you havent already.

Ditto! My mom always made me read encyclopedia's and stuff starting when I was around 10. Wasn't allowed to watch much TV either. Turned into a pretty voracious reader! It's good though, least your brain isn't turning to mush. And it'll help a lot in college.

i only read paintball related things and books that my teachers assign me to read, other than that i don't read at all. the last book i can remember reading in my freetime was Holes and that was in like 4th or 5th grade and i just graduated from 8th grade.

I tend to go for sci-fi (though University killed pretty much all of my recreational reading time - at least I can still read during the summer).

Robert A. Heinlein has a number of excellent books, and many of them are linked by common characters and plot lines. Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert and Arthur C. Clarke, alongside many others, wrote a great deal of "classic" science fiction. 1984 and A Brave New World both have some interesting parallels to our current society.

For something a bit different, Louis L'Amour wrote several very interesting non-western novels. "Last of the Breed" is a cold war thriller, and he wrote at least one book that could be considered fantasy and another story set in the 13th century.

I've also enjoyed the work of a number of writers mentioned in this thread. Douglas Adams' work is hilarious.

As for kids reading 500+ page books, I went from barely reading anything for entertainment to Tom Clancy and a sampling of pretty much everything I listed above in grade 5 (great teacher...).

Some of my favorite books are:
Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield
Atlantis Found by Clive Cussler (most of his books are good)
                            What If?
                            What If? 2
                            The Odessa File (forgot author)
I'm reading Sahara by Cussler right now; however, I have to read the Odyssey by Homer, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Kesey, and My Name is Asher Lev by Potok before August 26th

It also has some good information on the life of Drew, and how he has even tried to kill himself twice! Didn't expect that out of Drew Carey...

"Marine Sniper" (I forgot the author at the moment as well...damn!) This tells about the military life of the greatest sniper the US has produced, Carlos Hathcock. Very good read, got to see how he lived, and what tactics he used. Also very good at showing the teamwork involved on being in a sniper team
these are very good. also check out "nam" its a collection of short stories by guys that went there. very interesting read. i like grisham but i have a hard time finishing his books for some reason. after "a time to kill", "the firm" and "the client" i started struggling. perhaps once the movies started coming out i quit reading them.

one from stephen king (aka richard bachman) is "the running man". the book is one billion times different and better imho than the movie. i think the only things similar are the characters names and the name of the story. past that, its as different as night and day. its prolly my favorite book.
