Digital Camera help

Hey guys, I need your help. I need to get a new digital camera for my girlfriend for her graduation gift. Looking to spend no more than $300, and trying to get the best bang for my buck.

Any of you have suggestions on specific cameras and also good places to find good prices??

Thanks in advance guys, as much as I'd like to take the 300 and buy my Phantom, I need to get her graduation present ordered this week.

here's my recommendation:

Minolta DImage-X



Cool little camera. 2.0 megapixels, I believe with internal 3x optical zoom. No external moving parts in this puppy. Nice minolta optics: F/2.8-F/3.6 = pretty nice for a digital camera.


I'm pretty sure they can be had for about $300.

If you don't decide to pick this one, I recommend that you choose a camera from a manufacturer that already makes camras: Nikon, Minolta, Canon, Fuji, etc... They generally use their own optics which are more reliable.

Anyone have a reputable yet low price website for ordering?? and I think I'll pass on the Kodak. I was looking into the digital elph, but it is $299 for a 2.0 mp camera.

Cannon Powershot A-40.

Best camera for under $300, easily. Removable lenses, great manual features, etc. etc.

Go see the picture quality on the A-40 vs. any other camera in the same price range, it'll blow them all away.

Irobodden, Thanks for the info, however one snag...The A40 is discontinued
All the places on that website that list it are out of stock of it, or I could pay $505 for it?! a little retarded since it's a $299 camera... I guess the A60 and A80 are supposedly coming out sometime soon, but I kinda needed to order it later this week.

Er...a60 is out, and is $249. Any opinions, same features as A40?? as good? Better?

I bought my camera last summer with money I got from graduation... All I did was go down to circuit city, then best buy, and a few other places and check out the cameras and prices.

I settled on the Canon S200. I love this thing. It was $350 last summer, now down to $300 most places, 250-275 on sale. Its pretty good, 1600X1200 (2.0 megapixels) max resolution, along with the ability to take up to 30 seconds of movies (with sound!). I have even had an 8X10 picture blown up from pictures I've taken with this camera. It isn't the BEST possible, but unless your 2 feet away from the picture you can't tell that it was taken with a digi cam.

I also love the thing because its so small! I can easily just toss it in my pocket, and forget about it. Of course, that was last summer and now they have smaller ones.

I'm no photo-nut, but I love my camera...

Well, since the cannons get such rave reviews, I guess it is down to the A60, and s200 ELPH.

The A60 is a better camera, with the interchangable lenses, and a better optical zoom, however the ELPH is smaller and more girly, aka my girlfriend would like it more.

Now the real kicker, the ELPH is $30 more for a worse, yet smaller camera. AAARRRGGGHH!! WTF This would be so much easier if I could just ask her to point at what she liked.

I doubt she wants to learn the manual features, buy new lenses, etc.

I bet she'd rather have something she can take anywhere...

nah, but thats my reccomendation too. The S200 is small, durable, and takes great pictures... I havent really used the A60, but the S200 has some mass to it, so it feels like it could take some punishment I would put it through. I also haven't come into a situation where I'm thinking "If only I had a manuel feature, or different lenses, my pictures would be complete!" or something like that. The s200 does exactly what it is supposed to do, take great pictures in a small package.

My only grievance is the memory card. It only comes with an 8mb card, enough for just about 8 pictures on the highest resolution. I bought a 128mb card, and now I get around 135 on the highest resolution, and over 1400 on the lowest (800X600), so it all works out.

Oh, and what is she graduating? College or high school?
