NO!!! 30 extra minutes a day!!!!

The Fairfax County School Board has voted to make up for instructional time missed due to snow by extending the school day 30 minutes for a four-week period - April 21 to May 16 - and by using April 7, originally scheduled as a teacher workday, as a regular instructional day. The last day of school for the traditional calendar will be June 20. Updated calendars have been posted: http://www.fcps.edu/cal.htm




This is TERRIBLE!! I mean, I know they hafta make up for missed days becuase of snow... but this just SUCKS!! For people in middle/high school, it's gonna be like, what... five extra minutes a class? FIVE!!!!!!
argh.... I would MUCH rather have a shortened spring/summer break or take away other holidays... *waaaaaaaaahhhhhh*

man, not when I already have like less than an hour between the time I get home from school and the time I hafta leave for crew... and I don't get home until 7:30-ish... OMG I HAVE NO TIME FOR ANYTHING, AND THIS WILL ONLY MAKE THINGS WORSE!!!!!!

Its the most worst idea anyone could have ever come up with. Honestly

What do you think we can accomplish in 7 more minutes per class a day? Do you really think all the teachers are going to completely change their lesson plans to adjust to the 7 extra minutes? Can we finish what we were supposed to do in one class, then start a whole new unit in 7 minutes? No, we are just going to talk or sit around unless our teachers can find some tedious work to do. Then the worst part, the scheduling mess ups. This will change SO MANY THINGS for the worse. Personally, I cant stay after for German anymore for help and still make it to crew, or at least any amount of time worth anything. And because of that, and because of that ONLY, do I get a decent grade in that class. For parents, they have to adjust all of their child care plans and whatever they have to do. For sports, that screws up a lot of things, mostly because THEY CANT MOVE THEIR TIME BACK because students have to have time to do their homework, time that there will be less of anyways, for a lot of people its basically 1) come home 2) go practice. I come home, I relax for a little while and get ready mentally for Crew practice (as stupid as that may sound to some). And waiting till 2:45 instead of 2:15 for school to end absolutly blows in most student's aspects, and most of us will be too tired to comprehend whats going on (at the end of the day im just wiped out) because we all know school is too long and starts too early anyways (:)). Anyways, this sucks from all perspectives, and could be solved in a PRODUCTIVE way, but they decided to go off and do something stupid.

How about 7 minutes of grammar, spelling, and vocabulary lessons after each class? Besides, if they decided to lengthen the school year five days, you would just complain about that, saying you would rather spend an extra 5-7 minutes in each class.

No, not with the structured learning lesson plans we have to go through today. Vocabulary and grammar are STRICTLY homework if we ever have it at all, and ... spelling? Usually in each class there is a plan or something to accomplish and learn something new, and adding 7 minutes to each class is NOT going to let us finish all the material we missed. You cant start a whole new days worth of learning (1 and a half hour classes) in 7 minutes, because you will just have to review it anyways when you get back in class 2 days later! You are talking ot me as if I am pissed we are making up school, no, I AM PISSED BECAUSE THEY CHOSE THE MOST STUPID AND UNPRODUCTIVE WAY TO MAKE UP THE DAYS WE MISSED, I would have MUCH RATHER missed spring break or gone in summer vacation, than this crap.

Very simple points
- We wont make up the material we missed in these 7 minute extended classes (30 minutes total )
- It messes up everything else

As a matter of fact we are RUSHING to make up missed material within this quarter, because they didnt extend the quarter for the two weeks we missed or whatever, and since we need to learn most of it within in the quarter anyways, this makes it all pointless

On the plus side, it wasnt as long as I thought. Maybe it will just be like a "period" in the school year, not like it taking over our mentality (I cant think of the word to use). However I can guarantee that most of 13 hours of so will be wasted

holy crap calm down espo!! It's not the 7 minutes in each class, it's just the opposite. It's the fact that the 7 minutes will most likely accomplish little to nothing, whereas the extra half hour as a whole will screw up many people's lives for four weeks.

HAHA! thats nothin! my school (thank god ill be a senior) is extending hte school day by over an hour and we now have 9 periods and they cut our lunches in half (so we have like 22 minute lunches)

Oh yeah? Well at MY school, I get to make up whatever schedule I want! How do you like that? If a class is going to be going for too long, I simply drop it, or get up in the middle and walk out! And to top it off, I just plain decieded that I don't want to go to school on Thursdays, and nobody cares! :)

Sure, college is about 100x as much work, but at least the scheduling is easier...

lol wow I really didn't anticipate this thread goin in this direction...
I MEANT for the main topic to be about how it was stupid to add 30 minutes, 7 minutes a class, because teachers won't be able to rework lesson plans, etc... trust me, I am very aware how "easy" we have it in high school right now.
