i dunno if its what you're thinking of, but IMO mplayer is pretty cool : ) its a linux movie viewer, that has codecs for everything, which keeps me from installing realplayer or quicktime in a weak moment : )

If you find yourself using Notepad alot in a Windoze environment... Try Textpad instead.

As for other software, to name a few:

              GIMP
              Perl
Vi [well actually Vim - the new, improved version of Vi with more colors ]

I'm not under the alkafluence of inkahol that some thinkle peep I am. It's just the drunker I sit here the longer I get...

Actually, a lot of businesses still rely on COBOL... so much business stuff has been written with it. COBOL programmers are a dying breed. So, if you want to sell out... learn COBOL really well and it's possible to land yourself a 6 figure salary.

Fortran is also one of those languages still heavily used, but many may not realize. That's my language of choice for pumping out matrix crap. A lot of scientific computing stuff relies on it.

                            Automaggin,

If you are learning/using Java for your programming class at school you might find VisualCafe helpful. Its a full IDE for Java.

There is a free version you can download too.

                            *Goes and nabs a link*

Upon researching it seems that it is now called Togethersoft and is marketed by Borland.
