The thing that made the show funny originally was the wide open humor. There didn't have to be a word spoken, it could be simply an awkward silence.
I noticed that first, to me it almost seemed like the show suddenly shifted gears to appeal to a brain dead crowd

I agree the simpsons have been declining, but they seemed to bump up a BIT recently. Like last year, they were pretty awful (if I remember time right ) but they have improved I would say, but not to the point of where it was.

the simpsons has been waning, as you put it, for about 4 or 5 years now. i still watch it, its not as funny as it used to be, but it still is funny. plus the fact that there are hordes of people that will keep watching it because of the name.

in homers words, "Its a cartoon, it doesn't have to make sense"

Sadly, I have to agree with you python. The characters ARE becoming too drawn out. It kind of reminds me of the sequence of the Lethal Weapon movies, where by the 4th one they were depending way too much on the subtle humorous traits of Gibson and Glover.

i feel the simpsons is still a great show

they tackle a lot of political and social issues other network TV shows wont even touch. they talked about hatred of gays, acceptability of plastic surgery and the "barbie effect"(as previously stated), the potential failure of the two party system, obvious religious tensions and the failure of faith in our nation(the one episode where they joined the cult)

i really like the show and think its funny

i also think they definatly deserve praise for touchin on otherwise "shunned" topics
mostly he was insaine but he had fleeting moments of mere stupidity
