A MEB or Marine Expeditionary Brigade is the middle size of what is known as a MAGTF (See above post for more details) ...

So a MEB would be comprised of units (Companys, Platoons, etc) from its parent MEF (Or MarDiv) ...

The 2nd MEB is out of North Carolina so it would be made up of units from the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Force Service Support Group (or FSSG), 2nd Marine Air Wing (or MAW), and a command or HQ element.

A MEU or Marine Expeditionary Unit would then be made up of units from the parent MEB ... multiple MEU's make up a MEB ... something like a Pyramid where all the total combined units add up to a single bigger parent unit.

MEU's are the smallest deployable size of a MAGTF and typially deploy apart from one another or in some cases one MEU will deploy to relieve another MEU at a duty station.

So when they say the 2nd MEB has deployed to Iraq ... they mean the MEB as a whole is in the general area ... at that point the various MEU would then be deployed to locations within the theater of operation.

Well to give you some info ... the 2ndMEB (Elements of) are the key unit in charge of taking the town of Nasiriya. They are "Task Force Tarawa", which if you havent been following the news, they are the section that has seen the heaviest fighting and unfortunately the heaviest casualties of the Marines so far.

There is a almost morbid irony to the task force name, Tarawa was the bloodiest battle in the Marine Corps History ... and the Marines still came out victorious.

I know that as of this afternoon they are reporting 16 Marines MIA ... and they had I believe 10 Marine KIA over the past few days. Mind you the Marines are inflicting much more casualties than this to the enemy, and of the main fighting forces the Marines in general spend a considerable amount of time in MOUT training. MOUT = Military Operations in Urban Terrain ... or City Fighting. The Marines also have several units specially trained and equiped for this ... LARP (Light Armoured Recon Platoon) and CQB (Close Quaters Battalion ... a specialized Recon unit) are some of the best for this ...

As a former Marine myself, my heart goes out to the families of the fallen ... Semper Fidelis

Sorry I dont have anything better or more heart lifting to say for her.

Its short for Semper Fidelis ... which is Latin for Always Faithful ... its the Marine Corps motto.

One of my friends is Graduating the from the Marine Boot Camp today... He should be back this weekend for 10 days (24 if he gets recruiters assistance) before he's off to MCT. So far his MOS is intellegience, but I wonder if it will end up changing... I know one of my other friends came out with a different MOS then he went in with, and now is a Marine Weatherman in Mississippi... He doesn't seem to mind though.

2ndMEB is part of the 2ndMEF ... which is the 2ndMarDiv/2ndMAW ... the are almost entirely based out of North Carolina ...

                      2ndMarDiv out of Camp Lejeune
2ndMAW out of MCAS Cherry Point(HQ of 2ndMAW), MCAS New River(Attached to Camp Lejeune), and MCAS Beaufort ... which is really just a runway located between Lejeune and Cherry Point ...

Yes you are correct ... I was thinking about Bogue Field which is a small Harrier Training base located between Lejeune and Cherry Point ...

They actually close down the road and practice landing the Harriers on this road.
