    Another Forum?

I know the Mods closed the 2 political debate threads we had going. Some people enjoyed them, some did not. I realize the mods gave us WIDE latitude to continue them. Some people went over the limit with a bit of name-calling. Do you think we should have a debate forum or thread going forward? Do you think it could work or are we talking flame fest?

I think you'ld be asking for trouble. I realize that some people can be civil and talk it out, others cant though. Plus, how often will we have "debates" or things we can debate over? What happens when the war is over? What do we debate about then?

I don't partake in any of the "debates" or this vs. that threads mainly because I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough on some of the topics. So rather then open my mouth and look like a fool or insult/offend anyone I'll keep it to myself. I do enjoy reading them at times though to see what others have to say.

We don't really need it. The only reason I ever got in any of the debates was because I couldn't stand the stuff being posted. It might not be bad for AO if we just avoided posting the stuff altogether. It is very devisive. This, of course, goes for BOTH sides. Posting one side (the side more popular on AO) and expecting the rest of us to give our silent consent is not going to work. BTW 1stdeadeye have you read that Newsweek article I posted in the French thread? I posted it just for you...

it wouldn't work, because you have some hardhead, uninformed, people on AO... and I don't think that they could control what they say.. that's the reason we have to have mods anyway.

it would be pointless too, it would turn into a flame war.. every debate ends that way, b/c even if one side gives proof and the other side as no logical reasoning they will stick their point... and then just flame... happens all the time...

As much as I like debating politics, I kind of liked this forum for it prevented it. So I will have to say no, we do not need it.

I read it, just found it condecending and biased. No supporting facts or anything, so I choose to ignore it!

Condescending and biased? Lack of supporting facts? I'm travelling today for business and my rental car happened to be tuned to Limbaugh station. Much like many of the people on this board he chooses to take reasonable opposition to the lack diplomacy of the current administration and claim that these opponents are motivated SOLELY by their blind hatred of Bush. I find it humorous that someone who makes a career out of promoting blind devotion to one party and blind opposition to another can claim that we are motivated by blind hatred. I also noted that he calls us out here on the west coast the left coast. Talk about bias. Also he says we need to "get the French back". Our interest in France (economically, diplomatically, and with regards to culture) are much greater than Iraq. We need to smooth ruffled feathers on both sides and be friends again.

That article was not condescending or biased. It believed that Bush was doing the right thing (action is better than inaction). It did, however, point out the exact issues that have displeased so many of our citizens and our allies. As I mentioned in a discussion to Shartley a while ago when I was an exchange student I noticed that tons of French youth had clothes with the American flag emblazoned on their chests (early 90s). Shartley was quick to remind me that this is not the early 90s anymore. This is true (much as I hate to admit it which means I am an old man) but it has made me wonder where all that good will went and where all the anti-American sentiment comes from? While all of it does not come from the events mentioned in the Newsweek article it is the source of some of it. Yes some of it is motivated by jealousy but some of the blame can be laid squarely at our feet.

I don't like articles from either side that spout numbers without proof. Show where your facts come from is all I ask. It was also written in a Monday Morning Quarterback style. I didn't like it. That is why America is so cool, I don't have too!

                    Yes you do!:)

To note, however, that now that we are in the war without UN Sanction I feel it is important that we win it conclusively. I don't want to inspire anymore Bin Ladens in a similar fashion to Mogadishu. I might not be happy about the administrations diplomatic measures but as it now stands we HAVE to win it. That being said some civilian casulties are going to happen. We cannot force our army to fight with one hand tied behind its back if that is going to significantly hinder our chances for a quick, conclusive, and decisive victory. It might sound like a brutal stand but war is brutal (which is the reason I wanted a compromise in the UN for inspections).

Well now I have totally hijacked your thread!:) I'll shut up now since I said I wanted to avoid political debates

EDIT: Hopefully all of us debaters can make it to an AO event sometime. I'd love to see what my paint looked like on 1stdeadeye, FactsofLife, and Shartley.:) What do you say 1de? Wouldn't you love to bunker CB?

I totally agree there. I still question this invasion and its true motives, but i understand that we are committed and we must win it as quickly and cleanly as possible. Actually tho, I think our military has been doing a great job, especially with keeping collateral damage to a minimum.

We will definately win this war. But will we win the peace?

I issued that challenge a bit too offhandedly! I forgot that you were the proud owner of an Xmag :) . Actually I feel pretty safe issuing my threats as I am safe on the left coast (to quote Limbaugh) in Oregon of all places. I can say whatever I want and not fear the fury of the Xmag.

That wouldn't be a challenge given I suck at paintball.
