    Saddam Hussein

I put this in the friendly corner because it isn't necessarily about the sport of paintball, but paintball is involved.

A local radio station has put up a billboard with three images of Saddam Hussein, and for a minimum $5 donation, anyone can take shots to their heart's content with a paintball gun. They had hoped to raise $5000 in a week for a fund going to the families of people serving in the Persian Gulf. ---- They raised $8000 on the first day. They are cleaning off the billboard at night so it is nice and clean for the next day's targeting.

I'm taking my 4 year old later today.

By the way, according to the newspaper (where I got the picture) the guy taking shots in this picture is a local Korean War veteran.

Hate to be a spoilsport, butttt...

      1. Is this in city limits, and permissable by law?
      2. Where's his mask? Safety anyone?

Sorry, don't mean to sound like a stick in the mud or anything, but it's these kinds of things that possibly can give paintball more bad PR if something goes wrong.

As long as they follow good safety and don't have people firing at the local shops nearby instead of the sign, it sounds like a cool idea. I'd put a hopper into him.

Damn...I sound like a real adult. That sucks.

In city limits, but on private property.

I'll ask about the mask when I go today, but the community response has been great. A quote on the news was something like...
"I never knew how much fun paintball could be."
I didn't actually record the news so I don't know if that is word for word.

Sounds like good positive image so far.

Forget paintballing his face on a billboard. I'd pay money to take a crack at him with a high powered rifle. Now that's entertainment!

Any time someone posts something on this board, if there is a paintball gun anywhere in the picture and there is a person anywhere in the picture without a mask, someone always has to post "why wasn't he/she wearing a mask?" "thats bad for the sport" etc.

Although their motives are decent, it gets really old, and they're preaching to the choir.

Restola, Rooster, and irbodden did you guys even read my post? Yeah, I mentioned the whole mask thing even though I showed reluctance in bringing it up. The reason for the reluctance is because I didn't want to sound like a stick in the mud, or some "goggle nazi" as you put it. No, I don't wear a mask when I tinker with a gun and when I shoot it in the backyard. No, I doubt you're going to have a paintball do a 180 and smack you in the eye. However, I'm talking about us here (as in experienced players IN the sport).

In that post, I was talking about Joe Blow average person whose never played at all. I can't tell you how many times I've had somebody hold my gun or one near me for the first time and they get to talking and swing the gun around where it's pointing at your face. They don't even think about it since they aren't around it much. All I was trying to say was safety should be exercised in a situation where you have people using a piece of equipment they aren't familiar with. If it were you guys or me, no, I doubt it would be that big of deal. But you always have to play to the lowest common denominator.

If they give some guy the marker to shoot the sign, and something doesn't work on it, he might fiddle with it. The person running the deal might be busy talking to someone and the next thing you know the customer guy has shot himself in the face because he looked down the barrel. I just say when dealing with zero experience people, it's better to be safe than sorry. You know first thing on the news would be "Man shoots eye out with paintball gun" and not "Man doing something stupid gets injured with paintballgun." As for the city limits thing, I was just curious about that, but it's not a big deal.

We don't have the luxury of other sports that just use "sports equipment". Like if they put the Saddam face on a post and had you whack it with a baseball bat. If the guy hit himself with the bat in the shin, nobody would say "Baseball's bad." Our sport uses a "gun" however, and to most parents in this country, gun=bad or gun=dangerous. So we have to at least keep an eye on outside things that aren't related to our sport, but could negatively affect it's name by using it's equipment. Sorry, I care our sports reputation.

If people are out to get you that bad, they will find a way to come after you. I'm not going to change how I do things just to satisfy them.

That maybe true, but if "they" are out to get me, I'm not going to make it easier for them to do it. That, and I'm not going to let others make it easier for them either. I like my freedoms as a paintball player, and I don't want those altered or gotten rid of because somebody who doesn't even play is reckless and unintelligent with their decision making.

I'm not saying you have to change the way you do things...I don't care if you wear your mask everytime you touch your marker or not. That's not my point. We are experienced players that are around the sport and it's equipment everyday, so we know a lot more about what's safe and what isn't. However, as I said before, Joe Blow average citizen doesn't know what we know...so for them safety should be even more stressed. That way their unintentinal ignorance of the equipment doesn't harm the responsible and skilled individuals like ourselves or our sport. That was my point.
