deep blue?

can you post threads in the deep blue non-paintball related? i've had a sudden urge to be a little daring, i'm in a machine shop at school and i want to build a rocket from scratch (yes i know the hazards!) but i'm no rocket scientist...but it doesn't take a rocket scientist just to make 1. i figured seeing that the deep blue is for "but only high end technical subjects are allowed" and it's kinda of an engineerer's guild it would be a nice place to look for answeres...can i post it there?

It is for paintball related things, not just techical things in general.

rockets are extremely simple. never heard of anyone making one out of metal though. too dangerous when it comes down if the cone doesn't eject. i wouldn't recommend it.

yes, the rocket it's self is easy to make....it's designing a nozzel for the propellant that you plan on using that's the hard part....it's also hard to design in the parachute recovery like you get on the cardboard modle rockets too...where am i gonna get the ejection charge from? it's getting it so the nozzel (chormoly, toolsteel, or colbalt steel) doensn't force it's self up into the body of the rocket (aluminum) it's getting it that you don't have any leaks at the top of the nozzel so it doesn't blow up on the launch pad. that's why i'm not looking to design 1, i know i can't, there's too much pysics involved, and too much chemistry when you take into the count of the burn rate of the propellant, the force it exirts, what it will take to contain that force, fin position, size, and style (yes there's different styles) how to get the most effiency out of gasses (nozzel design) so on and so forth

so any 1 know where i can find some plans to make 1? i'll be hitting up the book store shortly and the library, but i'm not sure if i'll be able to get plans from either...just the basics

Have you seen october sky?
If you have a hobby shop, they will most likely help you out easily. Even though what you are doing is a higher level than a hobby shop (well, what they sell, you never know what the people in there have actually done), they can most likely help you out with at least a few things.

have you ever used the rockets that they sell in hobby shops? they sell propellant and an ejection charge in a cardboard tube for a couple bucks. all you do is make sure it's seated in the bottom of your rocket straight. after ignition it fires for a certain amount of time, coasts, and then fires the ejection charge.

now if you want to do all that yourself i wouldn't have the slightest idea. that just got a whole lot more complicated. and if you're building a big rocket make sure you know the laws in your area about how high you can go before you need a permit.

I remember watching a show on TLC or Discovery Channel about a rocket competition. It was for the highest flight. Some of them were made out of metal because of shear force and the amount of propellant they used and of the size on a few of them. Making them shouldn't be a problem. If it's the size of one of them models in the store, you can use the pre-made propellants. Just use one of the larger size ones if your rocket is aluminium.

I don't want to get into a political debate here or anything but for krikes sake! If they can't let a kid aspire to be an astronaut and shoot off model rockets in the field behind his house without first signing over his firstborn and get fingerprinted, the terrorists have already won.

i know all about the ones in hobby shops, unfortunently there are none around here...i just have like 4 more holes to drill and tap then i'm done w/ all my required projects and i just wanted something to do...and a rocket always seemed like it would be cool to make

not hard....it's called an ultralite you don't have to be licenced by the FAA to build or fly 1...it's highly recomended by every 1, but you don't need a licences to fly an ultralite

make the nozzle at the bottom a screw in. you can mount whatever you're holding your fuel in on it.

the cone should just slide in. the cone doesn't need much force holding it in. since during flight the only force should be downward from wind resistance. then you want it to be able to pop out if that's how you're going to deploy your chute.
