Well, I wanna get a home theater set up. I've got a decent tv, I'm mostly looking at the reciever, and speakers for now. I'm looking for something like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=...=1552&scat=242 Anyone have any advice for buying something like this? What to look out for?

Well, that's not bad for a beginner setup. If you really want to step it up, though, you're gonna need some floor standing speakers and a bigger subwoofer. Make sure all your speakers are from the same maker, same product line. That way they're voice matched. If you're going to splurge on one speaker, get a really nice center. It handles more sound than any other speaker in the system. For the sub, look in the 200-300 watt range, and a diameter of at least 10". For the electronics side, most any new receiver will do, just make sure that it has DTS. Look for a minimum output of 100 watts per channel. Furthermore, check that the total harmonic distortion(THD)is less than 0.1%. If you want to impress, look for one that is THX certified. Beyond that, most of the features on receivers are just fluff, so find one that suits your style. It is possible to spend way too much on this stuff, so look around for good deals, in stores and on the net. Ebay is always great, but I go to http://www.etronics.com for my home theatre and car audio stuff. I think you'll find their prices are pretty good.I'm nothing more than text to you...

the reciever in the package would work great got all the necessities that are needed, wouldn't worry over thx because its just a way for george lucas to make more money. the speakers not really impressed with, you need a powered sub not passive. try to find speakers to match the size of room there be in. dont need to be floor standing they make bookshelf speakers that will work fine. after you invest in your system purchase "video essentials" it will help the setup of tv(color,contrast,brightness,etc.)and with match the sound level of your speakers and sub. one other thing is cables they do make a difference. remember its takes 10-20 hrs of music to burn in speakers, dont play in high levels could damage speakers till burn in.

dude. I don't know how much you have to spend, but those packages are made cheap and you get what you pay for. I bought the kenwood package then the pioneer package and returned them both. You are better off buying a decent receiver with some features and a nice powered sub and good speakers. I have a sony receiver a cerwin-vega 250 watt sub and floor standing jbl's. It sounds awesome and loud.... If you have the money and thats just my opinion.
If you ever get down to NJ you should take a trip to a 6th Ave. store. Prices are way better and the people know what they're talking about.Comment
I don't have much money, and I'm pretty much set on one of those 'home theater in a box' things. If I had the money, and the patience, I'd buy individual components and get a sweet system. I figure I'll wait till I'm out of college and have a decent job and a house before I get a real nice setup.Comment
