    just a thought

one of my class mates was talking to a teacher and i overheard the teacher say "oh well I live in the past" i didnt pay much attention to this but i started thinking about the phrase "we live in the past"
the human brain recieves data from a source then processes it till an understanding between two people/computers/animals can happen. well this whole process takes about 1/16 of a second (give or take) and given that thought, by the time we understand whats happening around us in communication or just observing the present has become the past and our brain will start proccesing the present all over again. so all that your mind is thinking has already gone into the imediate past and you will never know the present in time, you will only know the past. so given that we all really do live in the past.

I think I know what your trying to say. I've had a few beers, and just read your post once though. What your trying to say is that, the brain takes a little bit of time to proccess stuff, so by the time it proccesses it, it is the past, and we're thinking about new stuff. Is that close? I dont think that being a 16th of a second behind really makes it the past though. Technically it is, but it's so short that it really doesn't matter.

I understand. The brain is 1/16th of a second slower than everything happening...

BTautomag - i know what your saying. also wouldn't the fact that light takes a small but sometimes significant time to reach your eye also affect people "living in the past"? For example, the sun sets, but for another minute (arbitrary amount, i forget the actual one) you still see it b/c the light still is still traveling to earth? maybe? i dont know.

*edit* - flamebo, i cleaned up and punctuated the post. Thanx for bringing that to my attention, i hate when other people do that. i was just typing as fast as i was thinking, and my hands didn't stand a chance

I totally understand what you're trying to say.

This is what I've been thinking about lately....
How much of our time and energy is used for doing things. I am a pretty active person, but I bet I spend about 99% more time thinking than acting, think about it.
When you're walking somewhere, you aren't really thinking about walking, you already know how to walk. You're thinking about astrophysics or something.

And people's perceptions of us are totally different then how we percieve ourselves. My idea of who I am is probably much different than anyone else's idea of who I am. My idea of me is based on the countlest hours I have spent in my mind, while everyone else's idea is based only on what I have said or done.

Whoa I just read that and I sound like a crazy person.

                    Should I institutionalize myself?

                      ok...

if you remember something that happened a minute ago and it rehappens(is that even a word?) in your mind, does that mean you are time traveling? If you go back in time to stop somthing from happening and succeed then you would never have went back in time to stop it so it would have happened, so then you would have went back, but then you would have stoped it so you wouldn't have went back, so it would have happened if you didn't go back... I think I am giving myself a headach. So next time someone thinks of posting somthing like this, just say no. It will cause much pain and suffering to me and anyone else who has lower brain power. OOOOWWW Dang brain cramp.
You smell like dookie... No really though.

Why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway??? Sorry I couldnt resist. Intruiging posts though. I love these types of conversations. Like, my red could be your blue. Stuff like that. So weird. Want to hear a very depressing thought? In about 15 million years, the earth will no longer exist. When the Sun goes Supernova, everything on this planet will be blown into a billion little peices. Kind of makes everything seem stupid dosent it. Live life to the fullest cause it surely is not eternal. Nothing is.
