The substance you use to create the art. (pastels, pencil, ink, etc...)

whatever you are making art out of. Clay is a medium. Paints are a medium. Wire is a medium. Sheet metal is a medium. Computer programs are a medium. Music is a medium of art.

That is probally like a graphite pencil or somthing.
To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered
where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus,
and a clown killed my dad.

I don't think they had graphite in the 1800's. Illustrations are Gustav Dore's based on the poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner."

looks like a pencil or a print, to me, could be pen and ink as well, it's very hard to tell.

The bottom one looks like a print, and the first two are either lead, or ink.

It would be much easier with more blown up shots.

Edit: Oh, and three looks to be whatever 2 happens to be.

the originals might have been done with a coal pencil?

I think a medium is the same thing as like getting a "C" in art. Not an "A", but not a "F". Right in the middle there. Yeah....C is a medium.

You're correct, that Litho isn't the actual medium, but its a very specific artform. It's true meaning doesnt refer to copies or poster making. It starts out as a sketch scratched into a coated metal plate. The plate then goes through several washes, and is covered with a type of ink. The plate/ink combo is pressed onto paper. That is where the print comes from.
