high school hazing

has anyone heard about the chicago suburb highschool hazing that sent like 10 kids to the hospital? its all over the news and not just local news, might i add, but on CNN, BBC, everywhere. its gone pretty global. some of the people here are now targeting paintball because on one of the videos that they have a kid with an angle shot a girl on the spinal chord with a marble with the velocity jacked way up from point blank. it did perminant damage. i think that these kinds of things give paintballers bad names, even though only a total motard would ever do anything like that.

i forgot to add that that is going to be the highschool that i enter next year.

geez. my friend in folsom got shot with a marble at a field by some sniper. it didnt have high velocity, and it wasnt point blank, and he still said it hurt like crap.

I haven't heard on the news that a marble was used, only a "paint pellet gun." Nor have I heard that any injuries were directly linked to the use of a paintball marker. In the video, I did not see anything that looked like an Angel; looked more like a red Java Compact or BE Avenger(?) to me. The clip I saw did show the girl getting shot from a distance of about six feet.

My roommate, a non-paintball person, was asking if this was brought up on any of the boards. I told him that surprisingly, it's been very quiet and I'm not the type of person who brings it up, anyway. Sounds like the kids in Glenview/Northbrook might be blowing it out of proportion a bit.

well, from the video, i thought that it looked like an angel. maybe something along the lines of a 99. cause i know a guy that goes to GBN and has an angel and an e cocker that he won from tourneys. well, i think that it was a marble, frankly because it didnt leave any break marks, and it looked alot closer than 6 feet. i dont think that people from my area are blowing out of proportion. 10 people have gone to the hospital. 6 in need of stitches or broken bones and the rest from severe consusions.

The "blowing it out of proportion" comment was aimed towards your comments about shooting marbles with an Angel, not about the seriousness of the situation and the stupidity of the students involved. You say you saw an Angel, I saw a Compact. I'm not Walter Jacobsen and didn't go through the tape frame by frame, but it might be hard to tell a break when people are covered in feces, urine, and animal entrails. Besides, have you shot Marbs lately? Those things don't break on trees from six feet away!

I also stand by my statement that I have yet to hear about any injuries specifically resulting from being shot with a paintball marker.

I graduated from Loyola in '91 and had MANY friends from GBN (and GBS). No one ever talked about it, just as we never talked to them about things like Kairos. It's a shame that what used to be a rite of passage has now turned into a violent, felonious occasion.

I just don't understand the mentality it takes to think that something like this is a right of passage. I mean, I can understand some ribbing and whatever. I mean, crawling through the mud and getting yelled at is one thing. Getting covered in piss and feces is just disturbing. Get the tar beat out of you is just uncalled for? I mean, is Powerpuff football really worth that? There are some really sick people around, ya know?

It looked like a spyder to me. I saw it on a special on "Perspective with Walter Jacobson" on Fox, which I usually don't watch because their news is such crap.

i think we are getting far from the point here. these people are seriously messed up to do it to other people, i think its inexcusable to do that kind of stuff to others for a "hazing" or "initiation" and i really hope that they are punished severely
