It is just a famous turning point in the history of the Christian church. It is at this battle that Constantine told God that if he would help him win, he would convert to Christanity and stop the killing of the christians. And God told him (or so he says) to put that saying on his standard and he will win. He did, they won, and the Roman Empire officially started to become Christian. It means, under this sign we shall conquer, or something to that effect.
