This is true everywhere. It is not the people that pay $7.00 for a nose-bleed seat. It is the corporations who pay over $1mm per year for superboxes and skyboxes. Last time I took client s to the Vet and used the Penthouse Suite (Skybox) the bill came to over $2,000.00! You have to use the Vet's caterers and beverage service as well. That bill was only for food and beverages. If you factor in the cost of the box and valet parking passes it is much higher!

Having a private bathroom though makes it worth it! If you have ever been to the Vet, you know what I mean!

Ok here is my problem with it all. He said he used them during batting practice to hit more balls for the fans. Is it really that hard for a professional baseball player to hit a homerun off a guy that is lobbing balls right over the plate so you can make contact??? It really just boils down to the simple fact that he broke the rules. It doesn't matter if cork bats don't hit any further, all that matters is there is a rule against using them. You break the rule you should get punished. Next time one of you gets caught cheating on your girlfriend/wife just simply tell her that it was a honest mistake and that you had plenty other times to do it but you didn't. Then tell her you just did it to make the girl happy and you don't need to do it. See how well that goes by.

It changes the weight distribution of the bat...taking weight off the end of the bat lets you get around faster...More bat speed lets you catch up to faster pitchers. Also more bat speed lets you swing later in the pitch, so you know whats coming...curve, fasteball, changeup, whatever. Corked bats make the bat lighter, but try to retain the stiffness of the wall of the bat.

Ive corked 2 wood bats...and you can get more distance with them. They let you swing faster and more accurately; therefore, you can get under the ball and get more distance.

The way the physics guy was talking about is pure physics...transfering kenetic energy from the bat to the ball. The player can trade the mass of the bat for bat speed, but the player still gives the bat the same amount of energy. Then the enegry is transfered to the ball. But if you can be more accurate with a lighter bat, you can get more distance. Yale can kiss my a$$, Penn State is where its at.

As for the pros, they all cheat. I love baseball, but professional sports ruin everything.

Here's my take on the subject:

Did he intentionally cheat? I doubt it (the fact that the other bats were checked an found to be legal is the determining factor for me). Is he still accountable? Yes, he is. However, I can understand the use of a corked bat at batting practice, as it WOW's the crowd. Maybe a corked BP bat could be marked in such a way that it would be impossible to mistake for a regular bat (maybe OSHA orange).

It does not matter that he admits using corked bats in batting practice or at exhibitions, since he was neither at batting practice OR at an exhibition. He was playing in an actual game. Yes, the games that he gets paid so much money BECAUSE of what he does with a bat.
It's possible that there was BP before the game. That's the only reason I could see that the bat would have been at the field that day.
There are three kinds of people in the world: Those who can count, and those who can't.

              With understanding comes understanding.

I am to amazed at the responces here. Judging a man because of one corked bat when his others were not. Should he get suspended yes, but kicked out of the game. Come on.

Look at his actions after he saw the bat was broken. To me, if I was using a corked bat and I saw it bust, I would pick up both pieces, or at least keep one in my hand, and have the bat boy quickly run to pick the other up. Or something. I wouldn't be sitting in the dugout all calm and wonder why in the world the game has stopped.

On a side note, President Bush might have had a little solace after this incident.

I think that he should be suspended and should get a big fine. How does one bat out of 76 get up to the plate?
