    harddrive question

i just got a 180gb wester digital and i have to use an ata 100 card to use it. i installed the card, so how do i hook the harddrive up to it? on ide1 i have my primary hd and the 180gb one, and on ide2 i have my cdr and dvdr. do i have to plug both the ide cables into the card, or just the cable that the harddrives are on? i tried a couple different setups but i cant get it to work.

Your wondering why it wont boot to them right?

Go into tyour BIOS ... go to your boot sequence, disable your normal hard drive and make sure the "OTHERDEVICES" is set to ATA/SCSI

Then put your new drive on the primary IDE of the ATA card

    Try that...

Try this if you still get no joy, also this makes copying your own bands music cd's possible

Primary HD set as master on IDE 1, CDR on same IDE cable set as slave

Secondary HD set as master on IDE 2, DVD on same IDE cable set as slave

DVD and CDR are interchangable if you have problems with the cabling reaching but either way both set as slave.

You will have issues burning from the dvd drive to the cdr if they are on the same IDE cable.

I do have to ask as to why you "have " to use an ATA 100 card for your new HD to work, is your mother board 20 years older than god? or some other strange reason?

winxp doesnt standardly support harddrives over 130gb or something like that, and it came with a ata card so i might as well use that.

          Don't use the ATA card

Put the drive on like normal ... WinXP should be fine w/ it.

You might want to load SP1 after install to make sure Windows is up to date ... but you should be fine.

If your motherboard see's the drive normally at its FULL size, dont use the ATA controller.

          Sincerely,
          Dave

You really don't want to do that. The channel sets to the slowest device, which every other device besides the HD. My guess on why you need to use an ATA100 card is that either your MB is old or you BIOS does not support your new drive. In which case you can update your BIOS.

It only takes forever if you format from DOS

I suggest using Partition Magic ... As much as I hate the program, it works great for quick formats of new drives.

Partition programs are evil and should be made to self destruct as soon as you open the packet

But to format under Win XP you go start, settings control panel, administrive tools, computer management then choose disk management it is reasonably painless. Drive letter asigning need a little juggling to get what you feel is the correct order but other than that...

PBZMAG I suggested that layout for connection so that everything will work in unison not fight against each other, sure speed configs will be a small issue but minimal if you do the numbers....data retrieval will always be compromised by the slowest component, wether they on the same data cable or not. The MB is still accessing the drives (cd, dvd, HD) in readyness for whatever the user wants to do.

                    hehe,
                    I agree, they're evil.

But if its a bare drive only being partitioned for space then its fine.

Now if your one of those people want to "re-partition" w/o losing data ... I DARE you to use one..lol.
