    New Linux box

I just put together my first Linux Box, with left over parts to use as a game server Oced P2 866 @ 1005mhz, 256ddr, old Nvidia TNT pro w-36mb, running RedHat 9.0 and a 40gb HD I just swapped out of my XP PRO box(replaced with a WD120gb 8mb buffer specail edition). Who else runs a linux box? Iny suggestions for good freeware linux software?

Gaim was included with RH 9.0, I got it up and going. I am currently trying to get a Unreal Tourny server running, I just cant seem to get it right yet . I just had to install a old SB 16 card because the on-board sound was doing realy strange things, but now every thing seems fine. Looks like I will just need to play with it a bit longer. Other than the servers I still need to find all the plugins for Mozilla, Im haveing problems on some web pages needing JAVA and Active X, lise AO's Chat room Other than that I have been useing this Box all day, updateing and downloading everything I think I will need for it

Dude if your running a *nix type OS ... then use Bit*hX .. its a irc client native to Linux, *BSD, etc ... much better then trying to do it through the crappy web interface.

Welcome to the Linux community. I'll conceed that trying to figure out how to get the box up and running will be a pain in the rear for the first month or so, but you'll be MUCH happier in the long term.

As for set-up, first thing with RH 9 is to dump the built-in sound drivers (arts & esound) and replace with the Open Sound System (oss).

Open Sound System is an Open Systems/UNIX audio and MIDI architecture which supports off-the-shelf audio hardware.

For the Java/Mozilla compat problems, go to freshmeat.net and lookup a package named Blackdown Java 2 Standard Edition for Linux.

After about a month of using Linux as a total desktop replacement to Windows, you'll be much more comfortable with it ... after six months, you'll have a replacement app for everything you used under Windows and will never want to switch back. If you find you need to - for something like scanner or digital camera support - check out VMware.

Optimize cloud infrastructure with VMware for app platforms, private cloud, edge, networking, and security.

Good Luck, and again, welcome to the Linux family!

www.xchat.org is by far my favorite irc client for linux, it's probably included with redhat 9, at least it is with 8.

Hey Nobody!! Sounds good! That actually inspires me to make a linux box as well. I had one for a time but not enough time to mess with it. Maybe if I have the chance to, I will this weekend.

Dryden, thanks for the links, I will check those in a few and I have been readeing about the Blackdown Java, it looks like my next download. Getting this box running hasent been much trouble, I had it running and online just under 2 hours. I dont plan on makeing it my main comp but to use it as a inhome game server, and something to learn linux with.

                            beware of the penguins!

As society and the problems that face it become more and more complex and machines become more and more intelligent, people will let machines make more of their decisions for them, simply because machine-made decisions will bring better results than man-made ones. Eventually a stage may be reached at which the decisions necessary to keep the system running will be so complex that human beings will be incapable of making them intelligently. At that stage the machines will be in effective control. People won't be able to just turn the machines off, because they will be so dependent on them that turning them off would amount to suicide

sometimes I just freaking hate people. which means the next day I will love them for the sake of balance, but right now I will just concentrate on the hating. Hate hate hate. Blaaaarg! ;)

Well now the linux box is getting on my nerves, I cant get the CVS system installed, And I need CVS to install WineX, and I need WineX to install my windows based game servers, and my main reason for a Linux box is a file/game server, *^&^@^$@$@%$@%$ !!!!!!! .
OK I feel a little better now, Iny one else ever have a problem with instlling a "system" when you have upgraded versions of it required dependent systems? I have newer verisions off all the files CVS requires to be installed but it wont see them, I know they are there because when I try to add the files(Krb5-libs 1.2.7-10, Openssl 0.9.7a-2) the installer tells me, "there is a new verision installed" and the installer closes.
I may just need to wipe my drive and re-install RH9 with all the extras installed.
