Australian Supergun Capable of Firing Over 1 Million Rounds Per Minute!

I came across this article while surfing through CNN.com.

This weapon uses electronic ballistic technology to reach insane rates of fire. Also, with electronic ballistic's, the only moving parts are the bullets as they leave the barrel.

Check out the companies website (http://www.metalstorm.com/) for more. Very cool stuff!

Below is a link to one of the demo videos from their website of one of their various weapons firing 40mm grenades at 600 rounds per minute. (3.6 megs)

Yeah, this type of weapon was in the prototype stages a few years ago. I have seen a 5-barreled electronnically fired pistol as well. 3 different calibers/ammuniton types. Pretty cool stuff.

"a handgun that can only be operated by an authorized user " - That's the one. I believe it had a fingerprint reader built into the trigger itself.
"I would like nothing more than to walk around
wearing a shirt with a giant arrow pointing
downwards, but I have this strange feeling
that most people would take it as some kind
of sexual suggestion rather than an attempt
        to infer one's final destination."

Big problem...slow to reload, heavy as heck, hard to conceal, cannot be man-packed, and uses proprietary ammunition.

The million round claim isn't what it actually shoots, as it can only shoot as many projos as there are barrels for them. Fired all at once in sequence, and the RATE OF FIRE is a million, but not in reality. Aiming is also very difficult, and will result in friendly fire and unintended casualties.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there can be some pratical use for these...just not in combat.

My guess would be at best point defense systems or possible a replacement for the current anti-ship missle system currently in use ... PIVADS I think ... sorry Im a Jar-Head not a squid ...

Possible the land equivalent ... basically throw a ton of rounds at something and one or more is bound to hit it.

i think they could set that up to be like a moble mine feild just set it up with some sensors and when any thing steps into that area they get shreaded. and the good thing about that would be when you are done you can just pack up and leave and don't risk people in 25 years killing them selfs.
I have seen a lot of what the world can do an it's breakin' my heart in two

not to mention that your barrel would be bannana shaped very quickly

                          Hmmm,
The defensive role for this thing sounds like the Phalanx system on some carriers. Yeah, I agree with Army it would be too useless in a combat role. What if they use caseless ammo? I know the G11 prototye from HK could carry something like 90 rounds in the weapon itself.

Let me see if I can find the link...

                            Electronic ballistic technology?

                            Like a gauss cannon?

I think they mean more along the lines of electronix firing sequence ... the only working model of a gauss cannon Ive seen took up the space of a whole room.
