Where does a freckle come from?

I have some freckles on my arm, and new ones pop up all the time. it makes me wonder "what the hell are they" Some of them are "removable" some of them are just deep into my skin. so whats the deal?

I know sometimes when you go out in the sun you get more of em.

I think its the mark of the devil. The more freckles you have, the more evil, and badness you have in you.

Well, being highly frekled and quite evil also, I will have you know that freckles are a genetic trait that is passed down through your family.

anyhow the basic principle is that a person likley to freckle has an abnormallity that causes the mellanin in your skin to bunch up and thes the blotchy appearance

some nationalitys are quite prone to freckleing, as it has been recycled throughout the peoples multiple times. Of the most common nationalities Irish and Norse are the most likley to show heavy freckleing .

You smile, but that is exactly one of the risks with freckles - that they may become cancerous. As ed said, they are made up an accumulation of melanin, the normal pigment of your skin. But darkening freckles, just like darkening skin, is a sign of sun damage. And of course, sun damage is what gives you skin cancer down the road. Don't mess with the sun.

If they aren't round and perfect(lopsided) I'd get them checked out. Thats what they taught us in biology. I've had a few red ones pop but then they go away.

I get a fair amount when I spen alot of time in the sun. But at my camp their was this kid that was just coverd in them. I swear there were more freckles than normal skin. This just proves what edwired said. I know lots of people that never seem to freckle too. I guess if your lucky you get the no freckle gene. If your realy unlucky you get the insanely frecked gene, and the rest of us are just in the middle. But sun exposure does have ALOT to do with it.
