Hey, after talking with the guys at the AMD booth at TechEd, I'll probably build an AMD system next. Then plunk the savings into a better video card.

Does that help you not to think less of me?

I just ordered a new laptop. An IBM T40. It's got a 1.6 ghz centrino chip, a 32 mb radeon video card (i forget the number, it's 7000 I think), some ram, yadda yadda. You know all that good stuff in something small enough for me to smash easily if I get pissed at it.

sounds ok apart from the evil ON BOARD SOUND, how crazy can you get, spend lots of $$'s and then skimp in that area, built in anything (except maybe a LAN)is a waste of time and money...the compromise that you are taking is not a good one as you are paying for sub-performance parts as you aren't ultimately gonna use the built in section and as such you are paying too much for the motherboard, bare boards are way better...but then they are more expensive generally but then actually do get what you are paying for not a trade off.

dude. nforce2 boards don't come without sound. it's built into the southbridge. and have you heard the MCP-T soundstorm? performance-wise almost as good as the audigy2 and there's only around a 5% hit to CPU utilization. like i'm going to notice that. you obviously don't know anything about this particular chipset so please don't lecture.

You just said it yourself, BUILT IN to the southbridge chipset, 5% is all important when playing games online so anyway to improve CPU use is gonna help, Audigy2 are good but you are correct in that other units sound as good.....Audigy (1?) for instance...on at clearence as they are now the "old" version. Don't get all upset as I haven't said that I like your choice of components, plenty of others in this thread have come up with superior setups to yours (on paper, real world use is a little different)and you haven't got all fiesty with them. If you want to be patted on the back everytime you post something then this isn't the place for that...and I ain't flaming you either, though I do feel a reply to your attempted cheap shot was needed.

mark - i'm just going to leave it at we disagree on some key issues here. the nforce2 is the best performing board available for amd processors regardless of sound. i didn't get "feisty" with everyone else because nobody else told me that one of my components was a "waste of time and money". they posted their more powerful setups and poked fun at my thread title. which is fine. that's why i named it that. as for everything else i disagree. i don't care to elaborate. let's just drop it. mmmkay?

foo - our computers are about the same. besides mine being prettier that is. i've got a better video card. you've got more ram. you have a dedicated sound card but my mobo's sound is better. i spent just a little more than you. closer to $1000. with my cooling setup i'll probably be able to overclock more than you though.

fire - damn that's a lot of RDRAM! that must've cost a pretty penny.

everyone else whose computer is better than mine - [cartmann]i hate you guys... i hate you so very very much.[\cartmann]

miscue wayyyyy up at the top - hell yeah it is! my eyes nearly fell outta my head when i first saw max payne with everything turned up. i keep staring at the box too. i can't get over that i own it. i was looking at the pictures i took like 5 secs after i took them. i said, "daaaaamn that's a nice... wait a minute! that's MINE!!!" lol.

Would it be possible for me (not too computer savy) to build one of these computers some of yall have listed? I am looking into getting a nice computer and have read that the only way to go is build your own. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

not really, when i had my 1.4ghz XP i never played a game that required more then 50% of cpu resources, and he will have a 1.8ghz cpu. even new games like halflife 2 won't require that much because if they did then so many people wouldn't be able to play. however, i do agree that you should have a soundcard, and even the old soundblasters are fine for anything games require.

i recommend making your own or have a friend that knows how to do it. i highly recommend not buying from dell or gateway(especially gateway) 3 years ago we spent $3000 on a computer that was "top notch" but it can barely do halflife at 40 fps until i got a new graphics card.

anyway the thing is for the same system at the time we could have bought it and made it ourselves for about 1000.
