Sharks are not very hard to get around here, when surfing they come very close to the surfers, but only one of my friends has been attacked, nothing serious just a few stiches.

Like a month ago, a 14 year old kid caught a 12 foot bull shark off the pier and faught it for 3 hours, he got it out of the water, long enough for people to take pictures, then his dad said to cut the line, because the thing was almost pulling the kid off the pier.

We have many sharks close to shore here now, because their was a temp change in the water, it is killing many fish, the sharks come very close to shore, almost beaching themselves, people just stand on the beach and fish for sharks, 95% of the time they catch a shark.

But if its nice little sharks you want that fit into tanks, that can be kept in a house, go to key west, get a charter and go to a wreck and just fish their, if you want to catch them easier just dive, its only about 10 feet to the bottom, you can just trap them in a net. Once they are put in a tank, it stunts their growth so they cant grow any bigger.

How they get them is the bad part about saltwater fish. A lot of the fish don't breed in captivity, and are captured in the wild. I remember seeing a show on PBS where they show some pacific islanders using squirt bottles of cyanide to stun the fish for easy capture. It kills the coral so it starts to destroy the ecosystem of the reef.

I am guessing the difficulty in obtaining some of the more rare type of fish adds alot to their cost.

When my tank was running, Yellow tangs were easy to get, so were not very expensive. That is here in Cal., so depending on where you are might make a difference on availability and price.

When I said I like the weird fish, this is what I meant. They call this on a "Camel fish" Or "Camel Cow". I had one that was about 5" long. He was a favorite of mine.

This is a "Flying Gurnard", it was very rare, and fairly expensive, at least for me. The pectoral fins are huge, but wat is really weird is that it spent alot of time on the bottom, walking on its ventral fins. The have minimal webbing, so look like fingers. He committed suicide when I was at work by leaping out of the tank. Found him dried up behind it, bummed me out.

This is a "Mandarin Goby". I think they are some of the coolest looking fish. Unfortunately they are more suited for a reef type setup. They are kind of slow and can't compete with more agressive fish for food. I never had much luck keeping one for more than about 3 months.

The flying gurnard was about 3 inches long. He seemed happy in the 55gal tank.

Here in Cal. there are many good places to buy saltwater fish. The prices all seemed about the same, no matter which place I went to. I think I paid about $36 for the FG, and under $30 for the Camel.

I never tried buying fish online. All my purchases were based on looking at the fish. I want to make sure it looks healthy before paying. They are expensive, and all the stores had no guarentee on salt water fish.

I had a local place that was really good. If I wanted something in particular, I'd ask if they could get one. I knew the days they got the new fish, so I'd come in to see what arrived. If I saw something I liked, I'd ask them to hold it for me, and pick it up in a week. If it lasted that long at the store, it was usually heathy enough to survive with me.

OK, 1 last pic. I know you have seen these. Lion fish. They are so cool its not funny. I found out a couple of things. They grow fast VERY fast. Mine doubled it size in a year. It went from eating live brine shrimp like the other fish I had, to me feeding it feeder goldfish. It was cool to watch it hunt. They use the feathery fins to make a sort of wall to corral the prey into a corner then they just suck it in.

Mine got big enough that it thought every fish I bought that was the right size was not a new addition to the tank, but lunch. It ate a $30 fire shrimp I put in the tank in less than 3 hrs. I was pissed.

You let the owner of the fish store net and bag him up, thats the dangerous part. Getting him from the bag to your tank is a bit easier. While I was never stung, I was told it would be painful, not fatal. I didn't want to try to see if it was true.

You don't have to have a hospital tank when you start the aquarium. I'm debating on a 30 gallon tank with everything and a expensive stand for 259 or a 55 gallon with less expensive stand for i think 269. It isn't that bad.
