    Yeah dont sweat the ticket. If he chose to give one to you, so be it. Next time just hit the deer. Especially if your in a jeep. Just go to court with it and do your thing. See, most cops will issue careless driving whenever they can, because people say "I swearved to not hit a deer!" almost anytime. ESPECIALLY when they fell asleep behind the wheel. I'm not saying YOU lied, I'm just saying, people lie to us every chance they get. So, bang, here is your ticket have a nice day.

    I am glad your alright as I'm sure everyone else is.

      Pfffffffft. I thought it was going to be a lot worse than that.

      Try this one on for size;

      The set up, its 2:30 in the morning and the state curfew for a 17 year old in NJ is 12a.m. and the cell phone rings, its mom! [O happy day...] so I had to rush home at 2:30 in the morning.

      I start the car off, roll down the 3 windows, [I have a convertible or somewhat of a convertible, a honda del sol...so all windows roll down] I put on the front and rear defrosters, crank the AC on 4, turn the heat up, and put on my high beams so I could see better. We get 10 minutes down the road, I'm driving, shifting and trying to talk to her about everything that was just happening, the car is still fogged...it just won't go away. I'm taking it slow because my visibility is poor. I come close to an accident but avoid it...and now I'm like riding down the center line. I go through the first narrow tunnel fine, I go through the second narrow tunnel and start going straight, except that the turn is a real sharp left. I kiss the guard rail and chew up the entire passenger side of my car. The girl didn't even see the guard rail coming, I never saw it...I just knew I had to have hit it when I heard the noise and then I steered as far as I could off of it.

      Had to call my parents back at 2:45 in the morning and tell them that I just got in an accident. They wanted me to file an accident report and all, so I call the police...they're having a ball because the girl I'm with is going off to PSU [penn state university, main campus] to be a doctor and she's older than me. They're telling me how i pick the good ones and stuff... I get home at like 3:45a.m. after needing to jumpstart my car, and then I had to break it to my parents that I wasn't actually with my friends but a girl...because the accident report says that she was there.

      They were disappointed to say the least. It was my first accident.

      *EDIT* We didn't need the Penthouse Letters version of your story. Army

        Sucks about the ticket, but hitting deer always happens. It was weird to read this, since my sister just hit one last night!

        Side note: I know a guy who hit a deer; when he saw it was still alive he cut its head off with an axe!

              I would argue that any one-car accident is the result of some degree of reckless driving.

              That includes both of my near-accidents.

                  That's a good call, not hitting the deer. My friend's mom hit a deer, and somehow the deer put it's back leg all the way through the windshield and hit her in the face. Well, wouldn't ya know the poor thing was still conscious, and it kicked her in the face 5 or 6 times trying to escape. Sorry the po was such a jerk to you, I've never had a police officer be polite to me, ever. And half the time the were supposedly trying to help me.

                      do you even have to call the police if you just crash into something, no one else is involved, and you can drive away?

                          I lost control on the highway once, slid off the side of the road. Everything was fine, I drove off. People kept asking if I waited for the police. I dont know why I would have.

                            This is fairly similar to what happened to my kid. He swerved to avoid another vehicle over the center line and then overcorrected and ended up into guide wires of a power pole. He was charged with failure to keep his vehicle under control. A two point violation. And that was indeed the case. Any time there is no evidence backing up what you swerved to avoid you have failed to keep it under control. You even admit you overcorrected. He did too. However I do not believe you should have been charged with reckless driving unless he saw evidence of excessive speed as well. And then it would push it over. So do you think he determined that? If not and if you feel its excessive then I would show up in court and be very polite and plead for a lower ticket. If your apologetic and not accusitory and all then you MIGHT catch a break. But at 16 your actions and demeanor in court is going to be closely watched and will make all the difference in the outcome. A reduction in points is very key from 4 to 2. It means a lot in insurance cost for the next three years and ONLY if you feel you can get it reduced then you should try. Good luck and glad your alright.

                            Oh and we got charged 2 grand to fix those guide wires...
