Question on knives and the law?

Hey everyone. I just got a quick question. Are you allowed to carry a knife around on you? Where I live is a bit...strange, so I like to have one with me lol. Maybe I'm paranoid, but thats besides the point. Anyway, a buddy of mine said you could, as long as when you got stopped you told the officer you had one and where it was, but that kid has done a little too many drugs and I don't want to put my faith in him. So if anyone thats an officer or knows the law could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Thanks alot.

where i live i think if your over 18 you can carry a knife as long as it isn't over 4", or maybe the width of your palm. to be sure just call your local police department and ask.

here u can conceal a knife that has a blade that folds u have to carry fixed blade knifes in the open such as your belt unless u have a conceal and carry license

It varies from state to state. Check out the Dept. of Public Safety in your state...

I have carried a knife (or 2 ) for most of my life...I can't imagine not having one.

This is my opinion and other's may think differently, but don't use that knife if you get in a fight unless you ABSOLUTELY MUST use it. If the situation is life-threatening, then by all means. If you get into a fist fight with a kid over something stupid, don't even think about pulling out your knife. If you're inexperienced in using one during a fight (just about everyone is) chances are you can get it turned on yourself and then you've got problems. Carry it as a tool, not a weapon.

If he doesn't have a weapon that he pulls on you, and you pull that knife? You're going to jail.

lol, I wouldn't even think of pulling it out unless I had to. I've had alittle experiance/training, but not alot at all.

So long as you're carrying the knife as a tool (within reason) you should be fine, but it's still best to check your local laws... or even give the police department a call and ask what the blade length/ knife restrictions are in your area.

With that said, if you pull a knife on anyone who isn't threatening you with a gun (or a large blunt object, etc.) you leave yourself open to all sorts of nasty weapons charges if the situation ever makes it to court (at least in Canada).

Generally, the cops and self defence instructors I've talked to in the past have suggested running quickly as the best (and safest) alternative to a knife fight
                      Usually around. Usually silent.

Real old-school switchblades are illegal anyway in the US. For some reason other auto-folders aren't, so it hasn't stopped me any. If the blade length is legal for any other folder, I wouldn't be all THAT worried about it if a cop stopped me with one. As long as you're cool about it, they'll probably recognize that an illegal weapons charge for a cheap little switch wouldn't hold in court, and not worry about it.

butterflys under 6 inches and single edged are legal in most areas. and actual switches are illegal most everywhere in the us no matter of length or edge type.
just get yourself a nice fast folder in about a 3 inch length that keeps a good edge and you should like it.

Theres only a few states that dont allow switchblades. Other than that there's only a blade size limit, but all stalitos are illegal.
