like most internet shorthand. it did start out with a typo.. people thought it was funny. so instead of Owned. its Pwned... since the O and P are next to eachother.. its like people purposely spelling "the" as the commonly misstyped "teh"

"Pwned" Originated from Quake deathmatch, where it started out as a typo, seeing as how the "p" and "o" keys are right next to each other. However, people liked the way it looked, and started using it in place of "owned". It's still in use today.
