Matt Reilly is ok... he's got a great writing style, even if some of his stuff is under-researched, or if he excessively sacrifices reality for creative license. He's definitely a fun read though.
I used to read a lot of Clive Cussler, but I just can't get into his stuff any more.
Not sure if I could pinpoint a single favourite book, but "The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams or the Red Dwarf series by Doug Naylor are pretty damned hard to put down.
For non-fiction, go read "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E Ambrose. Usually the author gives me the ****'s with his flag waving, but it's a good book about ordinary people in extra-ordinary times in the words of the people who were there. Also got made into an HBO mini-series if no-one feels like reading...

Autobiography/History- Scipio Africanus Greater Than Napoleon (close second is any history book by Allison Weir).
Serious Literature: Too many to tell you have Doctor Zhivago, Pide and Prejudic, Crime and Punishment, etc.
Science Fiction/Fantasy: Flamesong by MAR Barker (probably never heard of it)
