I just about massacred my face trying to shave

A girl called and said she wanted to go out. It was sort of a group thing but we've gotten kind of close so she called me up. But I'm a bit of a mess (having not shaved all day) and watching my Skins play. Basically, I'm not really anxious to go anywhere.

But she asks, says please, and even offers to let me watch Sportscenter afterwards at her house (not what you think-her Dad is there.) As I'm hanging up she says "Oh yea- you might want to get dressed up a little and shave."

Well its not that big of a deal. I gotta go to church tomorrow anyway so I figure its no big deal.

Right here I need to explain my facial hair-especially under my chin. It doesn't grow vertically. It goes horizontally and it lays almost completely flat. That means I pretty much always have to go against the grain.

SO I put some edge gel on and grab my Mach 3 (has one other shave on the blade). Up around the chin-no problem. Sideburn area and cheeks-smooth as a baby's bottom. Seriously: Drill Instructors could find nothing wrong if they looked all day with magnifying glasses.

    But the Chin -

I have no clue what happened. Its a little irritated (or so it seems) but I kinda just go around it, taking my time and kind of stretching my skin to get it close. Well I wash it off with water and take a look.

Blood is slowing seeping out under my chin. Granted it isn't chainsaw massacre but it isn't pretty either. Fortunately it closes up quickly and I wipe it off and put a very small amount of Neosporin on and massage it in. I put on a little more cologne to cover it up and head out.

No one noticed, but it was still annoying and somewhat puzzling. Any advice?

      I'm an electric man myself.

im kinda new to shavingm having only had to do it for over a year or two. Talk to my parents especialy and i refuse to do it. Im getting better though and in all my horrible "quick shaves" before dates ive learned some quick things that help out cuts. When you do cut yourself put a piece of toilet paper on the cut, hold it on for a few seconds and let the cut dry on it, the wet it a little to get it off about 30 sec later, it will seal up the cut nicely. As for not cutting yourself, ... the biggest things for me were to frequently rinse the razor, only go in one direction at a time, dont press to hard and put more cream on in places like my chin.

hehe plenty of info there, good luck with the girl

I use a mix of disposable razors and a straight razor. Yes, that's right, a 17 year old who uses a straight razor.

I got it from my dad. He bought it years ago as an extra and forgot about it and found it like 2 months ago in a drawer. He gave it to me and I tried it and found it actually did a really good job.

I have the same problem with my hacial hair...on my neck especially it grows sideways...and is pretty much impossible to get a close shave. As to the person talking about electics....i have used and own a higher end Norelco and was unnsattisfied with the performance. I could NOT get a close shave and it took WAY longer than the old blade.

I use a Mach 3 w/ the Gillette gel. Only had one problem. I shave downward from the sideburns towards my mouth. Then I do my chin, and then my mustache. Well, I was in a rush one evening, and while I was shaving the mustache, and somehow I actually cut part of my nose (I mean like cut part of it off). Sure, it was small, but it hurt really bad...lol Bled for a long time too. People kept telling me that my nose was bleeding lol. I'll never rush through a shave again.

Well I just got back about 4 hours ago (sorry but some of us need SOME sleep )

Anyway we went to some club that had like techno-electric with an Arabic twist (she that girl from Morroco I'm completely enamoured with). Any way she said she's never seen me with a clean face (I usually had some stubble or or even a couple days orth of growth when I saw her during the day) and she wanted to see what I looked like "prettied up" (my words, not hers). Most of men she knows are Arabic and they don't shave.

No one noticed that I had cut myself because it was kind of dark. Not exactly my scene but still a good time.

Some suggestions for you, if you want the best shave you can get you have to use a blade so don't go electric. Thats not to say that electrics are not good, I had a Braun electric for many years and it served me well.

I have sensitive skin also, hence the reason for the electric, it did a good job and did not irritate, but I would get shadow within 6-8 hours. Then I read an article in GQ about shaving. The 2 key things it said was do not shave 1st thing in the morning, wait at least 20 minutes after you wake up to shave, it lets all the blood get flowing good again and shave in the shower. I cannot stress enough how much shaving in the shower helped me. My wife bought one of the mirrors that goes on the shower head and WHAM, no more razor burn and a nice close shave.

I use a shaving brush and only buy high quality blades for my razor. Its all kind of a pain I admit, but for me at least its worth it.
That which does not kill us, cripples us for life.
