Hurray! I got a new computer! Well, it's not that exciting actually. I didn't really need one. I figured I'd post this just incase anyone is thinking of buying one. I got an IBM T40. It's pretty nice. I upgraded from a T22. This one has a 32 meg radeon graphics card, so that should be a big jump from my onboard 8mb one. It's got the centrino chip, and all the built in wireless stuff. I havn't used that much yet, but it's impressed me so far. I've noticed one thing that bothers me. The hard drive was supposed to be an 80 gig, but when I check it in my computer, it says 69.3 gigs. So, I dont know about that. I think I know what the problem is, but I'm to lazy to find out now. Otherwise, seems like a solid laptop. I'd recommend it to anyone.

The problem is differences in how windows and harddrives manufacturers define a kilobyte. If it's an 80gb drive, it should probably read as a 75gb or so, but 69gb does sound low. Look here for an explanation http://www.pcguide.com/intro/fun/bindec-c.htmlComment

it's an 80 gig drive, they just had to dremel a little off of the sides to get it to fit in the case. Common practice in todays laptops.. [grin]Comment

Like Emag said because of the whole 1024 kb thing you are "losing" a few gig's depending on the size of the drive. But 69 gig sounds much too low for an 80, I'd check up on it.
Edit: I was thinking about it and I seem to remember that IBM puts some stuff on a hidden partion, I dont recall what and how much space it takes up but that could be to blame?

Yup. It's the hidden partition thing. I asked one of my nerd friends here. It loses a few gigs cause of the different numbering system, which I expected. But, IBM has a hidden 'recovery' partion. It takes up about 5 gigs. I don't really need it. I'm gonna wipe the thing out and set it up how I want it.Comment
